Cuba Culture Trips Back On As Licenses Renewed

MIAMI -- Travel companies say they are getting permits once again to take Americans on cultural trips to Cuba after the U.S. government tightened requirements over complaints that the tours were skirting a ban on outright tourism to the Communist island.

At least 20 have been granted a month after U.S. travel companies reported delays in processing their so-called people-to-people licenses for legal group travel to Cuba.

Travel operators say they have kept most of their itineraries intact, but some have added additional programming and eliminated others after Florida's Cuban-American Sen. Marco Rubio criticized the programs as essentially being cover-ups for tourism.

The Obama administration reinstituted the licenses over a year ago, allowing organizations to take U.S. citizens to the forbidden island for educational activities that promote contact with ordinary Cubans.

Tapestry was There | Tapestry

This article originally appeared in the October 2012 issue of Chatter Magazine (a publication of Irving Bible Church).

Tapestry, the adoption and foster care ministry at IBC, had been serving families for almost two years when we first encountered them. It was the fall of 2006 and my husband, Scott, and I had just started considering this thing called ?adoption.? At first, we were just trying to figure out if adoption was for our family, and it was then that we attended ? Adoption Myths and Realities ? where we met Amy and Michael Monroe (Tapestry founders) along with other families. We ultimately decided to pursue an international adoption from Vietnam, which began a 21-month journey of faith and doubt.

When we started the adoption process, we had no expectations about the role Tapestry would play. But as we began to navigate the world of adoption and the mounds of paperwork, it became clear that we would need Tapestry for more than just information. We began attending a Waiting Families Group, large group educational events, and the first Tapestry Adoption & Foster Care Conference in October 2007. At each group or event we learned about things such as adoption-friendly language, lifebooks, and other aspects of the adoption journey we had never considered. And along the way, we became part of a community.

Community (That Continues)

Scott and I were a young couple just following God?s prompting, eager to soak up any and all information, but we were not prepared for the stress, the lack of control we would feel, and the testing of our faith. We needed families who had been in these same situations to hold our hands and believe with us.

When our dream of a baby from Vietnam came crashing down with the announcement that we were number four on the waiting list and the agency only had three children to match before adoptions from Vietnam closed indefinitely, Tapestry was there. As we navigated what the loss of our dream meant and where we should go next, Tapestry was there.? When a week before adoptions from Vietnam officially closed and God miraculously matched us to a two-month old baby girl in Vietnam (with completed paperwork in less than a week), Tapestry was there to rejoice with us. Three months later, when we were only given three days notice to pack for a trip half way around the world to meet our daughter, someone from Tapestry came to my house and helped me make sense of my empty suitcase. And when we brought our daughter home on Christmas Day 2008, Tapestry was there in the airport eager to meet our little girl and celebrate with us. At each twist and turn Tapestry was there when we needed community and support, and they are still there for us as we navigate life with our now four-year-old daughter.

Support (Now and Later)

Most adoptive parents assume that the hard part will be overcoming the mountain of paperwork and navigating the unforeseeable turn of events in the waiting process, but they soon realize that the challenge begins once their child has come home. Adopted and foster children often have needs that require parents to change what they do as a family and how they parent. Tapestry has helped us through these challenges as well, both big and small.? In turn, we have wanted to give back and help families in ways we have been helped. We are excited to serve in a ministry that supports families like ours.

This October, Tapestry will host the sixth annual Tapestry Adoption & Foster Care Conference on October 27th, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.? This conference is great for families in all stages of the adoption or foster care process ? those considering adoption or foster care, waiting families, foster parents, and those who have already adopted.? Many adopted persons as well as adoption professionals regularly attend the conference as well.

But Tapestry is much more than an annual conference. Tapestry is a ministry committed to meeting the real needs of adoptive and foster families, being in community with them, and supporting them through the highs and lows of the journey. Wherever the adoption or foster care journey leads, Tapestry will be there.

Native American Diets | The Paleo Diet

Dear Dr Cordain,

As we visit NYC and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian today, I decide to write you about a situation that is pressing (burning) in my mind. This letter provides you with some background followed by a potentially pivotal question that in my opinion could improve the health of many Native American tribes in the US.

I am an RD who currently works with a tribal public health program in CA, developing and facilitating classes for Elders with diabetes and providing staff education (mostly to people who are of Pomo descent). I happened upon the research of Dr Eaton about 16 years ago and have since been following you and Paleo research ever since. After reading the majority of your research articles and books (as well as Robb Wolfe?s book) and hearing your presentation in San Francisco (you might recall receiving my husband?s Chapman Stick CD if it made it to you at the LaLanne Fitness- Bob Culbertson), ?I finally changed to the Paleodiet and predictably have seen dramatic improvements in the health of myself and my husband. A giant heartfelt ?thank you? for going out on a limb to promote research that has and will save lives and dramatically improve the quality of life of so many people from a physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual standpoint.

I come to you with a conundrum that I would like to keep discrete until some sort of workable approach is determined. To my knowledge (and I am fairly new to working in tribal nutrition) the food patterns of the Native American (NA) tribes towards the West are H-G and overlay (perfectly) with the Paleonutrition paradigm. Going East the NA food patterns are supplemented with agricultural staples such as the three sisters (corn/squash/beans) and perhaps wild rice. The dilemma follows and I am guessing that you have thought to some degree about this topic or know someone who is working on it.

First, there is interest out here in my developing a grant-funded interactive virtual Food Medicine Wheel, modeled after an existing Food Medicine Wheel. My version would be Paleo. ?Tribes could use the Wheel to input their precontact traditional foods into the Wheel for archiving and sharing as public information. The Wheel could be printed and would secondly serve as a nutrition education piece to promote and educate the community on traditional foods (and revive them) again using the Paleodiet as an underlying foundation and premise. Other interactive pages would include traditional recipes and food stories. I believe that the potential is amazingly powerful in terms of the large numbers of tribes who could be reached and making the information readily accessible in a format that is easily shared. Lastly, the interactive pages could be not only modified (including the insertion of local images from the tribe) and arranged, they could be printed into a book so that each tribe could write and print their own book of local, traditional foods.

So I am in touch with a RD who is NA and has worked with many tribes across the US and an expert on NA historical food patterns. Although she doesn?t value grains and dairy as relative to the NA traditional foods experience, ?she is quite new to Paleo research and is not yet sold. ?She also brings up concerns about excluding the traditional NA agricultural foods listed above given their cultural significance and ?contribution to the modern food supply.? I am aware of the Hardin Village study.

I want to help the tribes to make dietary changes based on the healthiest, evidence-based diet (Paleodiet) and yet somehow address the sacredness and tradition of the sister agricultural foods. ?This obviously is a very sensitive issue that I want to avoid turning into an impasse. Further, please keep in mind the significant levels of unresolved historical trauma that underlie the perceptions of many of the tribes and NA individuals to this day. In the very least I could focus the grant on tribes to the West and others who have had a H-G only food pattern until modernization. It would be so much more expansive and healing to be able to offer all tribes a tool that respects their cultural traditions yet provides a diet for optimal health.

What suggestions or opinions might you have?

Again I deeply value your contribution to the health of my family, clients, and to people around the world. I am personally and professionally a dedicated advocate and promoter of the Paleodiet (and an RD too!). Please note that if you view my website, we are almost done updating the project examples to be meet the Paleodiet guidelines.

Thank you you in advance for your time and consideration.

Andy Culbertson MS, RD, CDEP

?

Dr. Cordain?s Response:

Hi Andy,

Good to hear from you and many thanks to your husband, Bob for the Chapman Stick CD which I listen to and enjoy. ?I have worked on and off with a variety of people and organizations who are passionate about the health/wellbeing and diet of ?native Americans. ?The closer we can mimic the nutritional characteristics of our ancestral hunter gatherer diets, the healthier we will be. ?As I have mentioned again and again, it is nearly impossible or impractical to attempt to exactly match the foods our ancestors consumed because they simply are not available to most of us, ?do not exist, or are culturally distasteful. ?Hence, for most of us the foods of contemporary ?Paleo Diets? must come from our local supermarkets, farmers markets, health food stores and local farmers, ranchers and producers. ?Although not precisely identical to hunter gatherer foods, modern day Paleo foods contain nearly all of the nutritional characteristics of pre-agricultural diets and frequently are ?superior to foods our ancestors ate. ?I have addressed these issues more thoroughly in my latest book, The Paleo Answer.

Getting back to certain foods with which you may have concerns: corn, squash, beans and wild rice. ?These foods frequently formed the staples in native Americans who practiced agriculture. ?All squashes are tasty, healthful vegetables that shouldn?t be avoided. ?As I have extensively pointed out in my scientific publication (Cereal Grains: Humanity?s Double Edged Sword) and in my new book, The Paleo Answer, cereal grains such as corn and even wild rice are nutritional lightweights when it comes to the 13 vitamins and minerals most lacking in the US diet when compared to meats, seafood and fresh fruits and veggies on a calorie by calorie basis. ?Further cereal grains contain multiple antinutrients which may interfere with gut, hormonal and immune functions and promote ill health and disease ? particularly when they are consumed as staples on a regular basis. ? Beans and legumes are similar to grains in their low bioavailability of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals) but contain even a higher dose of antinutrients. ?In my new book, The Paleo Answer, I devote an entire chapter to health problems caused by beans and legumes.

I believe that fresh and lightly cooked/steamed squash of all kinds should be encouraged in the diet of all Americans including native Americans. ?Fresh corn on the cob with butter is a wonderful summertime dish and when consumed a few times a month in season will have little adverse effects upon most people ? however autoimmune patients should be extra cautious here. ?Refined and even whole grain corn products (Doritos, corn chips, fritos, corn tortillas, corn flake cereals, corn meal etc.) should be eliminated from the diet of all Americans, including native Americans ?or rarely consumed. ? Most of us don?t consume wild rice as a staple, so if it is used infrequently as in a Thanksgiving Turkey Stuffing or otherwise- enjoy! ?When employed as a staple, wild rice like all grains will reduce the nutrient density of your diet and increase its antinutrient load.

Some healthy native American foods that we all should try to regularly consume are: avocados, squash of all kinds, pumpkins, chili peppers, jicama, Jerusalem artichokes, ripe red tomatoes, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, currants, guava, papayas, gooseberries, pecans, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, coconuts, venison, elk, bison, turkey, dove, quail, grouse, duck, geese, rabbit, salmon, cod, snapper, halibut, trout, mackerel, catfish, bass, walleye, crab, lobster, crayfish, clams, oysters, mussels, abalone, squid, octopus.

Best wishes,

Loren Cordain, Ph.D., Professor

Calif. initiative will test appetite for GMO food

A product labeled with Non Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is sold at the Lassens Natural Foods & Vitamins store in Los Feliz district of Los Angeles Friday, Oct. 5, 2012. International food and chemical conglomerates are spending millions to defeat California's Proposition 37, which would require labeling on all food made with altered genetic material. It also would prohibit labeling or advertising such food as "natural." (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

(AP) ? Calories. Nutrients. Serving size. How about "produced with genetic engineering?"

California voters will soon decide whether to require certain raw and processed foods to carry such a label.

In a closely watched test of consumers' appetite for genetically modified foods, the special label is being pushed by organic farmers and advocates who are concerned about what people eat even though the federal government and many scientists contend such foods are safe.

More than just food packaging is at stake. The outcome could reverberate through American agriculture, which has long tinkered with the genes of plants to reduce disease, ward off insects and boost the food supply.

International food and chemical conglomerates, including Monsanto Co. and DuPont Co., have contributed about $35 million to defeat Proposition 37 on the November ballot. It also would ban labeling or advertising genetically altered food as "natural." Its supporters have raised just about one-tenth of that amount.

If voters approve the initiative, California would become the first state to require disclosure of a broad range of foods containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Food makers would have to add a label or reformulate their products to avoid it. Supermarkets would be charged with making sure their shelves are stocked with correctly labeled items.

Genetically altered plants grown from seeds engineered in the laboratory have been a mainstay for more than a decade. Much of the corn, soybean, sugar beets and cotton cultivated in the United States today have been tweaked to resist pesticides or insects. Most of the biotech crops are used for animal feed or as ingredients in processed foods including cookies, cereal, potato chips and salad dressing.

Proponents say explicit labeling gives consumers information about how a product is made and allows them to decide whether to choose foods with genetically modified ingredients.

"They're fed up. They want to know what's in their food," said Stacy Malkan, spokeswoman for the California Right to Know campaign.

Agribusiness, farmers and retailers oppose the initiative, claiming it would lead to higher grocery bills and leave the state open to frivolous lawsuits. Kathy Fairbanks, spokeswoman for the No on 37 campaign, said labels would be interpreted as a warning and confuse shoppers.

"It's not necessary. Worse, it leaves people with the impression that there's something wrong with the food. That's not the case," she said.

The government approves genetically engineered plants and animals on a case-by-case basis, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture restricts the use of GMO crops that might harm other plants. The Food and Drug Administration can only require labeling if a genetically altered food is different ? in taste, for example ? from its non-engineered version or known to cause allergies.

The World Health Organization has said no ill health effects have resulted from GMO foods currently on the international market. The American Medical Association sees "no scientific justification for special labeling of bioengineered foods" but favors stricter testing before they hit stores.

Still, some consumers are wary and are increasingly demanding to know what's on their dinner plates. With California a trendsetter on other issues, whatever happens in the nation's most populous state could spill onto the national stage.

Already, at least 19 states this year have introduced GMO labeling bills, but none passed.

Alaska, with its dominant wild salmon industry, requires labels on genetically engineered fish, though none is currently on the market. Maine allows GMO-free products to be labeled as such.

The FDA is evaluating a petition to label genetically engineered foods nationwide; the group spearheading that effort is separate from California's initiative.

The push comes as genetic engineering is expanding beyond traditional crops. Last year, agricultural regulators approved the planting of genetically modified alfalfa, angering organic farmers who feared cross-contamination. An application is pending on an Atlantic salmon that has been genetically manipulated to grow twice as fast as a regular salmon.

California's ballot initiative would require most raw foods such as fruits and vegetables and processed foods by 2014 to bear the label "partially produced with genetic engineering" or "may be partially produced with genetic engineering." Meat and dairy products would be exempt even if the animals are fed with biotech grains. Organic foods, restaurant meals and alcohol are also excluded.

Supermarkets and other retailers would be in charge of making sure products for sale are properly labeled. Spot checks would be carried out by California Department of Public Health inspectors. The nonpartisan California Legislative Analyst's Office estimates that it could cost up to $1 million a year to regulate.

The initiative also allows individuals or groups to sue if they find food has been mislabeled. The California Grocers Association said supermarkets will do their best to comply if the measure passes, but noted it would be taxing on store owners. The group also fears being the target of lawsuits.

Association President Ronald Fong said it will be a burden for grocers to check the label of every box and keep track of their efforts in case they get sued.

"It's going to be a complete paperwork nightmare," he said.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which advocates for food safety, has not taken a side on the initiative. But Gregory Jaffe, the group's biotechnology director, favors giving the government more regulatory power over biotech crops.

"The solution is not labels," he said.

Me and My Doctor: TMA Piloting New Project: Walk with a Doc

?

Dr. Pike, member of the Texas Medical Association Foundation Board of Trustees and a plastic surgeon with Scott & White Healthcare, is the first physician in Texas to pilot the program. ?I see this as a prescription for healthier living.?I can help my patients?take ?actual? steps toward improving their health and fitness, while having fun,? says Dr. Pike.

?

Walk with a Doc was started in Columbus, Ohio, in 2005 and has expanded to 23 states. The program encourages walking because it is easier on the joints than running. Plus, it?s safe ? with a doctor?s consent ? for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions, and for those more than 20 percent overweight.

Dr. Pike is hosting the walk again Saturday, Nov. 3, at 9 am and on Dec. 8 at 9 am. At each walk, she will address a different health topic and answer questions.? If you want to walk with Dr. Pike, meet her at San Gabriel Park in Georgetown.

About two and half years ago there was this girl I was seeing. She was 15 and I was 18. Her parents wouldn't let us date because they thought I was too old. We played Romeo and Juliet for like a year. Then her parents found out and put a temporary peace treaty on me :feelsbadman:

Anyway... she turns 18 at midnight and its all I'm thinking about. Is that weird? She was literally perfect for me. I'm not gonna text or call her. I feel like if she wanted to talk she should be the one to start.

Times ticking and I can only pray...

What have you got to lose by wishing her a happy birthday and/or dropping some subtle hints?

Obviously it's what you want. Make it happen. If if doesn't happen at least you'll always know you tried instead of thinking "what if..."

I know she knows I want to talk to her. People talk you know. She got a boyfriend shortly after things ended. They broke up recently. But things ended pretty badly and I don't wanna be that crazy ex boyfriend type.

I mean two years is awhile. Don't you think that's a little weird? Or am i just over-thinking this?

Take some advice OP! You are in a good position. Just wish her a happy bday she will love it! The best time to ask a grrl out is when they are happy/excited about you and what better way to do both than wish her a happy bday after 2 years of hiatus. You are golden and have nothing to lose!
