The Many Tricks To Affordable Home Improvement | JeyamArticle

For everyone that owns a home, home improvement is an interesting and engaging topic. Although we all want to have the nicest home possible, for many people, taking on a home improvement project can seem scary and overwhelming. This article is meant to provide you with the information you need to take on the basic home improvement project.

If your rooms are looking rough because of nicks and dents in your wall, then you should try putting toothpaste in the hole to patch it up. Toothpaste can fill small nicks easily and can keep your room looking great. This is a cheap alternative and a quick fix.

When hiring a contractor for home improvement work, check their Better Business Bureau record. This is a great way to find out if there are any complaints on file for the company which would definitely be a major red flag. Go with a company which has a stellar rating with the BBB.

Store your glue bottles upside down! Ever get annoyed when the tips of your glue bottled inevitably dry up between uses? Removing those plugs of glue is no fun. To prevent this just turn your tightly capped glue bottle upside down and sit it down inside another container to keep it propped up.

Face it ? not everyone needs ten cabinets for their dishes. If your small kitchen is in need of some extra space, consider removing the top row of cabinets. This frees up the wall space for artwork or decorative wall covering and gives you more room to be creative with your cooking surfaces.

Any home will benefit from a regular painting schedule. Painting is one of those home improvement tasks that is not vital, but keeping up with it pays considerable dividends. A house which has been painted and repainted at frequent intervals will look more appealing to potential buyers. Homeowners that paint their houses regularly will also avoid the necessity of a major, expensive paint job when they decide to sell their homes.

Hunt down drafts in your house around your windows and doors, and seal them with insulation or weather-stripping to make your home more energy-efficient. On a breezy day, hold a lit candle or a stick of burning incense around the edges of your doors and windows ? with the drapes tied back away from the edges ? to easily spot drafty areas as the flame moves or the smoke wafts.

Make the plans for your home improvement project measure up to the standard sizes of supplies available at the store. For example, you?ll be buying wood that comes in even lengths measured by feet (4, 6, or 8). Try to make your project fit those measurements so you don?t have to do a lot of cutting.

To help improve your home, try installing a new kitchen. Some quick fixes include replacing or repainting your cupboard doors, units, or work surfaces. Also try installing new worktops for a new looking kitchen. All the furniture can be painted, glossed, or upholstered to help it look new or different.

Listen to a contractor when you discuss your home improvement project and pay attention to what he says. If he gently lets you know an idea is folly, or asks you questions to get a better understanding of your needs, then he?s probably a great contractor. Also, see if he?s listening to you or if he?s just trying to get you to do what he envisions.

If you are looking to replace a door or many doors in your home, consider aluminum-clad storm doors that can be found in your local home improvement store. This type of door is not only energy-efficient, but it will last longer and brave the elements while also insulating and preventing drafts in the entryways of your home.

If you have hardwood floors and pets, you know that it is almost inevitable that a urinating accident will or already has taken place. There is a simple solution to saving your hardwood floor. Find the stain on your flooring and take a bottle of hydrogen peroxide. Sit next to the stain and start pouring peroxide on the stain slowly. Make sure to exercise caution, because too much peroxide can damage your floors and have a negative effect. If used in the right doses, the peroxide will lighten the appearance of the stain.

A great way to add ambience to a room is by lighting a candle. Candles are a romantic gesture in any setting, but also give off a warm glow providing a room with the feeling of warmth and coziness. If your candle is scented, it also gives off a nice scent in the room while making you feel relaxed.

Don?t underestimate the power of a good home improvement project. Just a single weekend of work can drastically change the way people see your home. Now that you?ve read this article, you?ve got lots of ideas on where you can start improving your home. All you have to do is pick one and get to work.

Glass iPhone 5? Apple patent application shows the fragile future of smartphones

Yes, yes, we only reported on an Apple patent application a few hours ago, but interesting stuff is interesting stuff. While this morning?s news focused on Apple?s future attempts to get into and control your living room, this is an altogether more feasible idea: an iPhone case made entirely out of glass.

The patent application points to portable devices hewn from glass right the way round. That?s not to say that Apple want you to see the device?s innards, of course: think more along the lines of the current iPhone, only without the steel frame around the middle.

The patent application describes how the iPhone of 2013 could be built from a ?hollow glass tube? that then gets stuffed with tech, or by combining two half tubes together. The question is: why?

iPhone 5 jumping up to 4.6-inches?

Apple cites two main benefits to having an entirely glass iPhone. The first is that glass is better for conducting a wireless signal, and the second is that it?s more watertight. The patent application reads: ?The seamless enclosure, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing, can provide the added benefit of less contamination and moisture intrusion.?

We?re wary. These benefits won?t amount to much if the device they?re helping can?t survive a fall: the iPhone 4 and 4S are coated in glass on its front and back, and we know plenty of people with cracked devices caused by even the slightest of falls.

European Union investigating proposed purchase of EMI by Universal Music

By Agence France-Presse
Friday, March 23, 2012 19:55 EDT

?

BRUSSELS ? The European Commission Friday opened an in-depth investigation of the proposed purchase of British music label EMI Music by Vivendi subsidiary Universal Music Group, over competition concerns.

?The proposed acquisition could reduce competition in the recorded music market to the detriment of European consumers,? the EU?s Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said in a statement.

?The commission needs to make sure that consumers continue to have access to a wide variety of music in different physical and digital formats at competitive conditions,? Almunia added.

Universal Music Group last Novemeber announced its purchase of EMI from US bank Citigroup for ?1.2 billion (1.4 billion euros, $1.9 billion).

EMI ? home to a galaxy of stars including The Beatles, Coldplay and US pop starlet Katy Perry ? was seized by its main creditor Citigroup in February 2011 from private equity owner Terra Firma.

The purchase price represented seven times EMI gross profits before synergies, Vivendi had said.

The deal did not include EMI?s music publishing unit which is to be sold to a group of investors led by Sony for $2.2 billion (?1.4 billion).

The commission is expected to review that deal in April.

New Risk Standard - How Can SMEs Seize the Opportunity ...

There are opportunities for smart SMEs to use the new Risk Management Standard to engage staff, satisfy stakeholders and identify ways to generate new business.

The existing Risk Management Standard AS/NZS 4360:2004 is replaced from 1 July 2012 by a new, and improved, Standard AS/NZS ISO 31 000:2009 (adopted from an International Standard).

For entities that operate in heavily regulated environments (such as Super Fund Trustees, Fund Managers and holders of an Australian Financial Services Licence) the changes are significant because the licensing regime operated by ASIC and APRA links the operating environment to the outgoing Risk Standard AS/NZS 4360:2004.

The changes are also significant for organisations required to maintain a focus on workplace safety (e.g. manufacturers, mining and mining services) ? the upside being that application of the Standard should deliver a more robust awareness of the risks associated with operating the business.

The changes to the new Risk Standard deal with the manner in which risk management is addressed. In summary, risk management is:

  • integral to organisational processes ? it creates and protects value
  • part of decision making but must be based on the best available information
  • transparent, dynamic and responsive to change, but most importantly, is part of a business?s process of continual improvement
  • not an exact science and there will be aspects that are overlooked.

What does the new Risk Standard mean for SMEs?

Risk management is not about hampering business initiatives or avoiding risk. Indeed, in the post GFC environment, awareness and management of risk is paramount to a deeper understanding of your business drivers.

Risk management should be about understanding your operating environment and finding business opportunities by leveraging parts of your business that can withstand a higher risk exposure.

This means plugging risk management into the governance framework that you use to ?steer? your company.

Smart SME operators have the opportunity to address the process of managing risk by focusing on governance and identifying ways to generate new business. Indeed, a recent study by Ernst & Young, Turning risks into results ? Managing risk for better performance, identified that companies with mature risk management processes generated three times the EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) than companies at the bottom end of the maturity scale.

At the very least, identifying and managing risk will facilitate a more positive response from your key stakeholders.

How to implement the new Risk Standard

Generating a risk framework starts with achieving engagement from staff at all levels of the enterprise.

You could say that it requires a cultural change ? in that a culture of awareness of what risks exist within the enterprise will quickly lead to employees taking ownership of the management of those risks.

Too many SMEs adopt an approach that risk management is the problem of the decision maker (i.e. the founder, the executive management team or the Board).

Management of risk starts with your staff. After all they are the ones at the coal face of daily operations and the ones who manage the risks in a business, albeit intuitively and without realising they are actively managing the risks within the enterprise.

The simplest (and most efficient) way to generate a risk profile is to workshop the concept of what risks exist within your business.

You will be staggered not only by what risks staff can identify but more importantly the ideas they will already have for how to reduce these existing risks.

Providing an opportunity to voice their ideas and take ownership of the risk management process is a positive step towards implementing the new regime and starting on the road to cultural engagement.

Once you have staff engagement, the next step is embedding a risk framework into your organisation?s governance. This will help focus decision making on a positive search for opportunities that may have been previously hidden.

The positive in all this is that understanding your risk profile and managing risk (in line with the new Risk Standard) will lead to higher staff engagement, risk mitigation, positive favour from key stakeholders and the potential to identify new business opportunities.

Johnny Depp and Ashley Olsen: Rumored One-Night Stand Alert!

Johnny Depp and Ashley Olsen got it on, according to a tabloid.

The Dark Shadows star claims to be happy with Vanessa Paradis, his longtime partner and the mother of his two children, despite reports that the two are on the rocks.

This story will only fuel that narrative.

Hunk in SpainAshley Olsen: Hot

In Touch says that on February 27, Johnny was spotted making an exit from a building connected to Ashley’s apartment building “looking like he didn’t want to be seen.”

In fact, an worker in the adjacent building confirms, “An e-mail went around to the employees saying Johnny Depp was using our building to try to avoid paparazzi.”

It turns out the star, 48, was leaving 23-years younger Ashley’s loft.

“It was quiet in her apartment, like it was just the two of them in there,” an insider recalls. “It didn’t seem like it was just a visit between friends.”

Whatever the twosome were up to, it certainly left Johnny exhausted. When the star finally left the next day, “he looked like he was out of it,” an onlooker said.

Subverting America's Legal System | FrontPage Magazine

Scholar of Islam Andrew Bostom, interviewed recently about Islamic anti-Semitism here and here at FrontPage, has brought to our attention a revealing, 47-page Arabic-language document discovered by the Center for Security Policy and translated into English by his colleague at Translating Jihad. The paper was published by the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA) in 2007, and presented at their 2008 careers conference in Houston. The document makes it clear that AMJA?s ultimate goal, as Bostom puts it, ?is nothing less than the eventual subversion of the American legal system? to sharia law.

AMJA?s website explains that the group?s purpose is to service the growing Muslim population living in the non-Muslim Americas, giving them authoritative guidance as to what is allowable under the manmade laws of ?infidel lands.? The organization also offers itself as ?an authentic source of Islamic learning and thought for all peoples of the Americas.? All peoples who understand Arabic, that is. For those who do and who care to investigate, the organization reveals its subversive agenda.

As Translating Jihad notes about the newly discovered document from AMJA, the paper

makes clear that according to Islam, the only legitimate law is that which comes from Allah, and in fact authority to make laws rests with Allah alone. This renders every other legal system ? including the American system ? illegitimate.

Naturally, in the United States everyone is expected to abide by the law, under which all are equal, Muslims included. But AMJA?s authoritative rulings require all Muslims to defer to the law of infidels only according to darura, the doctrine of necessity, for ?it is required for a Muslim to be hostile to courts which rule by man-made law.? As Translating Jihad states in his assessment,

Throughout the paper it is made abundantly clear that Muslims should view the American and other non-Muslim legal systems as infidel systems, and that they are only to participate in them in specific circumstances in order to benefit Islam and Muslims generally. They are specifically instructed to feel hatred in their hearts toward such infidel legal systems, and to do everything within their power to make the Islamic Shari?a supreme, even if that means engaging in deception in certain cases.

Even if it means engaging in deception. It is disturbing enough that such direction is being given to, say, the average Muslim called in for jury duty, but this is expected to apply to Muslims higher up the legal ladder as well ? from legal aide to attorneys all the way up to judges. A Muslim judge too, according to the document, ?must in his heart hate the man-made law?:

He must also do everything in his power to enact laws that allow the Muslims to practice their Shari?a. He must keep it in his mind that he was not permitted to take this job except to serve Islam and Muslims. He must also? judge by the rulings of the Shari?a as much as possible, even if by a ruse.

So a Muslim judge is allowed to participate in the infidel system of justice only to serve Islam and fellow Muslims, not everyone who comes before his bench without discrimination, and he must rule as much as possible according to the dictates of sharia without attracting undue attention to his true intentions and loyalty.

92% Beauty and the Beast

All Critics (84) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (84) | Rotten (7) | DVD (36)

The greatest animated film ever made and one of the screen's great musicals hardly needs this (3D) sort of sprucing up.

What you gain in an extra, faked dimension you lose in lively, genuine beauty.

The set pieces are narcotically pleasing, especially the Busby Berkeley-style dancing-kitchenware spectacular, "Be Our Guest," and the romantic ballroom centerpiece that brings Beauty and her Beast together.

The 3-D pops out to enhance the drama or energy of scenes in which settings are large and integral to the action.

Some youthful memories are better not revisited, but this definitely isn't one of them. Sometimes you can go home again.

It is a surprise, in a time of sequels and retreads, that the new film is so fresh and altogether triumphant in its own right.

I admit it: I wrote this more than 20 years ago. But, like " Beauty and the Beast" itself, I think it stands the test of time.

Disney, please understand ... what people are actually showing up for ... they just want to see classic Disney on the big screen. The 3D is incidental.

Disney's gorgeous 1991 animated version of the classic fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" gets the same 3D treatment that was recently given to "The Lion King."

Watching this in a theater definitely makes it feel less like a "cartoon" and more like a significant film. Cogsworth poking Le Fou in the butt with a sword aside.

One of the brightest jewels in Disney's crown, Beauty and the Beast's 3D reissue takes nothing away and makes the film's brilliance even easier to appreciate; the movie is more beautiful and timeless than it ever was.

Beauty and the Beast is just as enchanting 20 years after its initial release.

The apex of an art form, a justly celebrated classic, and the best animated movie of any sort ever put on screen at any time.

The lines have begun to show in Belle's tale, which remains enjoyable but feels more like a quaint artifact than the masterpiece it once was declared to be.

Both TANGLED EVER AFTER and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are sure to enthrall audiences everywhere, even if the 3D doesn't really add much of anything to this animated classic.

A serviceable version of a classic fairy tale minus that crucial touch of magic.

And it is a joy to revisit the timeless pleasures of traditional Disney storytelling, with no attempts to add sizzle from celebrity voice talent or radio-friendly pop songs.

3D doesn't downplay the inherent artistry of the effort, but it doesn't enhance anything outside of ticket prices.

Beauty and the Beast looks beautiful and is sure to entertain, but this experience is superfluous at best-it was already a three-dimensional story long before these new technics.

Better remembered than seen, Beauty and the Beast has been treated unkindly not just by the years that have passed since it was released to enormous acclaim in 1991, but by a faddish 3D conversion.

Indian gaming policy becomes a delicate issue in Tempe | ASU ...

The City of Tempe is attempting to draft an Indian gaming policy that would formalize the process of acquiring grants from Native American communities. (Photo by Jessie Wardarski)

Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman chastised city officials at a council meeting Thursday for wording an Indian gaming policy draft in a way that could jeopardize relations between Tempe and surrounding Native American communities.

The drafted policy was an attempt to formalize the process of requesting and distributing gaming grants made by Native American casinos.

?I?ve seen other cities make huge mistakes in their processing because they have some sense they?re in control of this grant process,? Hallman said at the meeting. ?A good number of tribes recognize that they are the one?s giving out money.?

The danger lies in the attempt to formalize an informal process that is fragile and nuanced, Hallman said.

According to the Indian Gaming Preservation and Self-Reliance Act, passed as Proposition 202 in 2002, each tribe in Arizona must contribute a percentage of its gaming revenue to benefit cities, commonly in the form of Indian gaming grants.

Each Native American tribe must contribute up to 8 percent of the tribe?s gross gaming revenue to the state, according to the Arizona Department of State.

Eighty-eight percent of each tribe?s contribution will go to the Arizona Benefits Fund, used for reimbursement of Arizona Department of Gaming administrative expenses and for statewide tourism promotion.

Twelve percent of the contribution must be used to benefit the communities in nearby cities, commonly in the form of Indian gaming grants.

Each tribe has its own process for distributing Indian Gaming Grants, said Valerie Spicer, executive director of the Arizona Indian Gaming Association.

?They?re all unique,? Spicer said.

An agreement between the tribes and the State of Arizona defines the basic process, she said.

Changes cannot be made to the agreement unless a city has an agreement with the tribe they are receiving grants from, Spicer said.

Tempe works closest with the Indian communities such as the?Gila River Indian Community, the?Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the?Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, the?Ak-Chin Indian Community?and the?Pascua Yaqui Tribe.

?Tempe Assistant City Manager Jeff Kulaga took part in drafting the policy and said casinos have notified Tempe in the past that grants would be processed through the city.

?Once casinos figure out their money in October or November, we?ve been notified that money would come through Tempe,? Kulaga said.

Some tribes choose not to engage with city governments at all, preferring to distribute grants directly, and some accept requests by invitation only, Hallman said.

?Some cities have ? tried to set down rules about accepting money and have lost their communication with tribes altogether,? he said.

The Gila River Indian Community processes all grants through its own council and never goes through city officials, said Gabriel Montalbo from the Gila River Indian Community Council Secretary?s office.

?If the city has something that they want to move through council from us, they will be our contact,? Montalbo said. ?As far as anything being acted upon, it would be through our council.?

In cases where a tribe does use Tempe as a intermediary, the drafted policy calls for closer scrutiny of charities applying for grants and charities receiving money from tribes.

?If a Native American community chooses a nonprofit that they decided is sufficient for them, on what basis would we want to question that judgment?? Hallman asked.

?We?re talking about international relations here,? he said. ?To think a city is going to dictate the rules of engagement of a community that is at a higher level as a state and a nation is foolish.?

Hallman said only policies dictating Tempe?s behavior in initiating a grant request should be implemented.

The city staff members are working on revising the policy in consideration of Hallman?s criticisms, said Amber Wakeman, assistant to the city council.

However, with budget concerns more imminent, the chances of a new draft being presented to city council soon aren?t good, Wakeman said.

?We want to make sure we are being sensitive to these Native American communities and the nonprofit (organizations) in Tempe,? she said.

New civic activists shine at anti-Putin protest

MOSCOW (AP) ? A protest rally against Vladimir Putin drew more than 20,000 people on Saturday, far fewer than those in past months as the opposition movement appears to be losing momentum following Putin's presidential election victory.

Speeches by young activists like 27-year-old Maxim Kats, however, showed that some of the new political energy that has emerged in Russia in recent months is being channeled into local politics and civic activism. Kats and two others in their 20s, who just won seats on municipal councils, were among a number of speakers who called on Muscovites to get involved in how their city is run, starting with their own neighborhoods.

Putin, who was Russia's president from 2000 to 2008 and then moved into the prime minister's office to avoid a constitutional ban on more than two consecutive terms, won a third term in the March 4 election with 64 percent of the vote. Because of a change in the length of the presidential term, he is set to return to the Kremlin for six years and would be eligible to run for six more.

His decision to return to the presidency infuriated opposition activists who have grown tired of his heavy-handed rule. A December parliamentary election that was manipulated to bolster Putin's party angered many ordinary Russians and swelled opposition ranks.

Protests held after December's vote attracted up to 100,000 people in the largest show of discontent in Russia's post-Soviet history. On Saturday, the smaller crowd, surrounded by hundreds of troops and security forces, chanted: "We are the power," ''This is our country" and "Putin is a thief."

Although violations in the presidential election were numerous, observers said it was fairer than the parliamentary election and Putin clearly won.

The protesters said they did not recognize the results. "These weren't elections. This isn't a president," read a banner over a stage set up on Novy Arbat, a wide avenue in central Moscow.

Opposition leader Garry Kasparov echoed that sentiment. "This was not an election," Kasparov, a former world champion chess player, said from the stage. "This was a special operation run by a thug who wanted to return to the Kremlin."

Russian actor Maksim Vitorgan, who was among thousands of people who volunteered to monitor the presidential vote, said he saw so many people casting multiple ballots, known as carousel voting, that "an amusement park would be envious."

"We know the truth, but what are we supposed to do with it?" Vitorgan said, voicing widespread concern that the opposition movement is losing its voice.

The volunteer vote monitors were one new burst of civic activism. Another was the hundreds of people who ran for seats on Moscow's 125 municipal councils on March 4 as part of a new movement called Our City.

Kats, a former professional poker player, was among 71 who won seats despite what some candidates said was heavy official pressure to keep them off the ballot or steal their votes. The majority of those who won were in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

"If I did it, it means anyone can," Kats told the crowd after describing how he had ignored advice to cut his hair, change his Jewish last name and wear a suit.

Speaking after the rally, he said he would concentrate on making the city a better place to live, with nicer playgrounds and more pedestrian crossings.

Maxim Motin, 28, is another member of what has been called the new political class. He used his blog to help communicate with voters before the election and has suggested setting up an online community forum to discuss ideas for improving the neighborhood.

Masha Lipman, a scholar at the Carnegie Moscow Center who attended the rally, described the grassroots effort to win seats on the municipal councils as a societal change and said she was confident there will be more civic initiatives in the months and years ahead.

"What to me is extremely interesting is that something clicked and people overcame their cynicism," she said. "This was amazing."

A variety of new civic groups also took part in the rally, distributing literature or soliciting signatures for petitions to advance their causes.

The protest movement has been concentrated in Moscow, where Putin failed to win a majority of the votes and even came in second in some neighborhoods. Most of the protesters are white-collar professionals and students.

The numbers may have been down Saturday in part because it was the third day of a national holiday and many people had left town.

Mikhail Solontsev, a 19-year-old student, who has taken part in opposition protests since December, said the pressure on Putin remains high. "It depends on us whether he will step down or not, but he's already scared of us," Solontsev said.

Opposition leaders, however, gave no sense that they have a clear plan going forward. They also will struggle to maintain the unity of a movement that has brought together liberals, leftists and nationalists.

The protest ended peacefully, but leftist leader Sergei Udaltsov and two of his followers were detained afterward as they tried to march to nearby Pushkin Square. Since the presidential election, Udaltsov has returned to the confrontational approach of last year, when he spent a total of almost three months in jail as a result of defying city bans or restrictions on his protests. Udaltsov was released later Saturday, but faces charges that could send him to jail for 15 days.

Police also detained about 25 nationalists who broke away from the crowd at the start of the rally and tried to march.

In St. Petersburg, police detained some 40 people out of several hundred who took part in an unsanctioned rally.
