Associated Press Sports

updated 10:16 p.m. ET Sept. 28, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Graham Zusi scored two goals, and Sporting Kansas City clinched a playoff spot with a 2-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Friday night.

Jimmy Nielsen had to make one save to record his league-leading 14th shutout for Sporting (17-7-7), which extended its unbeaten streak to nine matches and widened its Eastern Conference lead to five points over the Fire. Sporting had not won against Chicago at home since a 3-2 victory on Aug. 22, 2007.

Chicago (16-8-7) had a four-match winning streak snapped and lost for just the second time in nine games.

Zusi put Sporting up 1-0 in the 11th minute, running onto Kei Kamara's cross and one-timing the ball past Sean Johnson. He scored unassisted in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time, working his way free and slotting the ball home just seconds from the final whistle.

Chicago manager Frank Klopas and Fire defender Gonzalo Segares were both ejected in second-half stoppage time, Klopas drawing a straight red card from referee Chris Penso and Segares picking up his second caution. Both will be suspended for Chicago's next match, on Wednesday at home against Philadelphia.

The idea is that income is greater than the expense and the person may start having some surplus that can be allocated to savings and you can invest at a later stage. Rowling launches novel to fanfare, mixed reviews

LONDON (AP) ? After months of hype and anticipation, J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults has appeared, swept into the arms of hopeful booksellers and an army of grown-up Harry Potter fans eager to find out what his creator has done next.

A gritty and darkly humorous tale of ugly realities in a pretty English village, "The Casual Vacancy" seems a long way from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and reviewers gave it a mixed reception. But Rowling said Thursday she wasn't worried about the response.

"I've had my books burnt," said the author, whose magical stories were condemned as Satanist by some Christian groups. "I've got quite a way to go to upset people that much with 'A Casual Vacancy.'"

A story of ambition, envy and rivalry, the novel recounts the civic warfare sparked in the fictional Pagford when the unexpected death of a town official leaves a vacancy on the governing body. Characters set on a collision course range from the affluent lawyer Miles Mollison to the Weedons, a ramshackle clan living in The Fields, the run-down housing project on the edge of town.

Rowling told a 1,000-strong audience at London's Southbank Centre that the idea for the book ? "Local election sabotaged by teenagers, basically" ? came to her on a plane several years ago.

Writing for a more adult readership, she said, had been "freeing" ? though "in other senses it's a challenging book," told from multiple viewpoints.

Rowling said the book's focus on teenagers, the heart of Pagford and of the novel, was not a million miles from her previous work ? although these troubled and profane youngsters are "not Harry, Ron and Hermione."

"They are very different teenagers," Rowling said. "They are contemporary teenagers."

The book's sex and swearing have drawn the most comment so far ? some audience members were startled to hear the F-word pass Rowling's lips during Thursday's reading. But the presence of death is perhaps the book's most adult element, and one that loomed over Harry Potter's world, too.

"Death obsesses me," Rowling said. "I can't understand why it doesn't obsess everyone. Think it does. I'm just a little more 'out.'"

Five years after the last Potter book appeared, Rowling remains the world's most successful living writer. The lines were shorter and the wizard costumes missing, but "The Casual Vacancy" appeared to some of the same fanfare that greeted each Potter tome, with stores wheeling out crates of the books precisely at 8 a.m. as part of a finely honed marketing strategy.

And Rowling retains the intense loyalty of Potter fans. In contrast to the tight security that preceded the book's release, the atmosphere at Thursday' reading was warm; it felt like a reunion. Several audience members asked Potter-related questions, which Rowling answered at length. One young man, wearing a "Rowling is our Queen" T-shirt, asked if her could give her a present. Rowling accepted it graciously.

Many in the crowd were young adults who had grown up on Harry Potter and we keen to follow her wherever she wanted to go.

"She's been such an inspiration to everyone," said 18-year-old university student Milly Anderson. "She's not just influenced people's childhoods ? she's molded them."

Anderson said she was loving "The Casual Vacancy" ? once she'd got over the change from stories of the boy wizard and his Hogwarts chums.

"There's swearing and sex," she said. "It's a bit of a shock."

"The Casual Vacancy" is already at No. 1 on Amazon's U.S. chart, and bookmaker William Hill put 2-1 odds on it outselling "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which shifted 2.6 million copies in Britain on its first day.

Reviews have been mixed. The Associated Press judged it a challenging but rewarding read full of emotion and heart.

However, The New York Times' influential critic, Michiko Kakutani, was damning.

"The real-life world she has limned in these pages is so willfully banal, so depressingly cliched that 'The Casual Vacancy' is not only disappointing ? it's dull," she said.

The Guardian newspaper's reviewer, Theo Tait, said it was "no masterpiece, but it's not bad at all: intelligent, workmanlike, and often funny."

The Independent's Boyd Tonkin found the sometimes "long-winded and laborious" writing soared when Rowling focused on her teenage characters.

Others, though, felt the lack of likable characters might alienate readers and Daily Mail reviewer Jan Moir slammed Rowling's stark focus on Pagford's haves and have-nots as the work of a "left-leaning demagogue" painting "a bleak and rather one-sided vision of life in modern England."

Technical problems also arose Thursday. Kindle readers and other e-book users in the U.S. complained that the font was so small they could hardly read it. The American publisher, Little, Brown and Company, issued a statement late Thursday afternoon acknowledging "there were issues with that file, including the adjustability of font color and size and adjustability of margins." The publisher said the problem had been fixed and that those with a flawed text should ask retailers to send a new one. Some readers also were unhappy with the e-book's list price, $17.99, although that didn't keep the digital version from topping the Kindle charts.

It's likely nothing Rowling publishes will ever match the success of the Potter books, which have sold more than 450 million copies around the world.

But booksellers are confident "The Casual Vacancy" will be one of the year's best-sellers, whatever reviewers say.

"A lot of children have grown up with Harry Potter. They're now adults who love books," Susan Sinclair, divisional manager for the Foyles bookstore chain, said.

"I think it's going to be a really big seller at Christmas. It'll be an easy gift ? but also a good one."

Ditch those sit-ups: Here's how to tell if kids are fit - TODAY Health

Alistair Berg/Getty Images

You want me to climb what? A new report suggests better, common-sense ways for testing whether children are physically fit.

By Maggie Fox, NBC News

Forget sit-ups and push-ups. The best way to tell whether schoolchildren are physically fit is a common-sense test of body mass index, whether they can run without getting out of breath, and grip strength, a committee of experts said on Thursday.

{{percent}}%

({{numVotes}} votes)

{{/data.answerData}}

As America?s children become fatter and more unfit, schools and the government need to keep tabs on just how fit ? or unfit ? they are, the Institute of Medicine panel said. Ironically, most schools have stopped doing this over the past 30 years. A report issued by the panel is intended to kick-start the process.

?We are very concerned that not a lot of kids meet physical activity guidelines, and that?s why we need to be monitoring their fitness,? says exercise expert Russell Pate of the University of South Carolina, who chaired the panel.? ?The big message here is that between the 1950s and 1980s we were monitoring fitness in American kids?and then they stopped doing it. It has?literally been since the mid-1980s that this has been done in a nationally representative sampe of American kids."

At the same time, schools crushed by budget cuts and?the pressure to bring up test scores in reading and math have shortened recess and physical education or even cut them out completely.

Right now, says Pate, there?s not a systematic way to prove that kids are less fit than they were in the 1980s, although common sense and obesity statistics would suggest this is the case. The President?s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition says fewer than one in five kids get the exercise they need. The report suggests ways to test this.

The good news: The much-hated baseball throw and sit-ups are out, Pate told NBC News. ?Some of the approaches that were common are really no longer seen as state of the art,? Pate says.

So what do they recommend? First off, the body mass index or BMI measurement. This comparison of height to weight really does do a good job of singling out who is overweight, the panel says.

For health experts doing national surveys, it?s important to measure not only BMI but waist circumference ? which shows how much unhealthy abdominal fat someone is carrying, as well as skinfold thickness, another measure of fat versus muscle. But schools can simply use BMI, which is very accurate for most of the population, the report says.

Shuttle runs and treadmill tests are very good ways to test cardiorespiratory fitness, they said. The shuttle run does require some equipment and training. ?Kids run back and forth from lines that are 20 meters apart,? Pate said. ?There is a device that beeps periodically. The kids run back and forth between the lines, keeping up with the pace of the beeper.? The beeper ups the pace, and the children run until they can no longer keep up.

Musculoskeletal fitness is a bit trickier to measure because it combines strength, endurance and power. ?Growing evidence supports use of the handgrip strength test and the standing long jump as health-related musculoskeletal fitness test items in youth,? ?the report reads. While neither is a complete measure of all three factors, they?re both pretty good indicators, the committee concluded. Modified pull-ups and push-ups are also alternatives, they said.

Pate notes that many?adults and kids?cannot do even one traditional pull-up. ?The problem with a traditional pull-up is you get a lot of zero scores -- you get a lot of kids that can?t do any,? he said. The modified version has the bar just 3-4 feet off the ground, and the child can hang on at an angle with his or her feet on the ground and pull up that way. ?They are partially supported,? Pate said.

Just last month, the President?s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition said it was phasing out the Youth Fitness Test, which dated back to 1966. The new Presidential Youth Fitness Program prescribes a complex set of standards, not all of which jibe with the Institute of Medicine recommendations.

Pate said it's all a work in progress, with national health leaders setting up a nationally representative survey of fitness in youth.

Every time that this nutrient is being , processed, woven, sprayed or manipulated, its microscopic materials can be released to the air, where they are often inhaled, initiating the introduction of mesothelioma.

The symptoms of mesothelioma vary from situation to situation and with the severity of the illness. Type of mesothelioma ? whether pleural, peritoneal, or pericardial ? determines what are the signs might be. Most of the time, the typical overall health of one person, as well as his/her age, can also play a role in how the patient is afflicted with the disease and which in turn symptoms are the majority of bothersome.

There are three types of mesothelioma:
Pleural mesothelioma ? a medical term for the deadly mesothelioma lung cancer caused by the actual inhalation of asbestos fabric. (Symptoms: difficulty ingesting, weight loss, coughing, puffiness in the upper body, especially the face and biceps and triceps, muscle weakness, soreness in the side of the chest, fatigue, perspiring, shortness of breath, and lower lumbar pain.)
Peritoneal mesothelioma ? has an effect on the cells of the belly lining, also known as the peritoneum, which supports and protects organs in the stomach. (Symptoms: vomiting, colon obstruction, stomach discomfort, weight loss, swollen tummy, blood clotting problems, fever, nausea, along with anemia.)
Pericardial mesothelioma ? has an effect on the pericardium, which is a membranous coating that surrounds the center, providing both help and protection towards the organ. (Symptoms: prolonged coughing, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and chest pain.)

Other signs can be jaundice, blood clots, organ bleeds, along with fluid buildup in organs and lungs.

If you have a history of asbestos publicity and have experienced these symptoms, you should talk to a physician immediately. The sooner that mesothelioma is available, the better the chances for survival and higher quality of life.

News and Society Blog-Environmental Info: Property Rights ...

What is the meaning of This thorny concept was at one time largely taken for granted, as municipalities absorbed landowners real property into projects that were described as for the public good. These projects could include, for example, eminent domain seizure to construct a public parking lot.

We now see municipalities with wildly different philosophies on eminent domain.

For example, some municipalities in Upstate New York have chosen to pass industry-friendly pro-fracking statements that imply the entirety of their population are eager to have their communities changed into ubiquitous out-door factories for the sake of hydro-fracking for natural gas. Some real property owners within the municipalities have protested the secrecy used to pass these statements; many of which are passed at the whim of the town board members and without public input.

Other municipalities that may reside next door to the pro-fracking town boards may pass bans and moratoriums while attempting to gather information on the fracking process that will relate to the effect on human beings and the environment in their communities. Some real property owners say this is an infringement on their right of use of and profiting off their property. The question of property rights and what exactly they include becomes a very important issue when deciding who can do what on their property. It should be noticed however that common sense should help to provide an answer once and for all, namely that to engage in behavior that has the potential of harming our natural environment should be reseached and studied completely before any action is taken.

People who own property and want to gain revenue thereof, should be able to do so, but all property has borders, and on the other side of that border is someone elses property, which could be effected by the changes and conditions produced by the property next to it.

A little discussed matter is whether the environment, in and of itself, has rights. The very mention of this perspective is sensitive. We have ideas that range from the environment as raw material for capitlistic profit to environment as sacred.

As a nation, we seem to have been unable to discuss this matter. Profit sounds great until you find a nuclear facility next door to your home. Without fail we hear that accidents can happen but they have been regulated for. This is a wildly interesting idea. The nature of accidents is that we don't know what they will be.

For example, the Assumption Parish, Louisiana sinkhole caught everyone by surprise, is ongoing, seriously dangerous, and not broadcast to the nation. The sinkhole accident is in the process of unfolding and as of now, nobody knows what it will do. I suspect this would be the time for the good legislators of Louisiana to start legislating.

We need a serious conversation about property rights. Instead, the topic is swept under the rug as corporations and government go about their business of profit and power.

The human beings, probably more closely related to environment than to corporations/government, need to think about their wishes.

Rajoy inches toward aid as protests, regions seethe

MADRID (Reuters) - Violent protests in Madrid and growing talk of secession in wealthy Catalonia are piling pressure on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy as he moves closer to asking Europe for rescue money.

Rajoy has been resisting calls from influential domestic bankers and the leaders of France and Italy to move quickly to request assistance, but a series of events this week will drive him closer.

With protesters stepping up anti-austerity demonstrations, Rajoy presents more painful economic reforms and a tough 2013 budget on Thursday, aiming to persuade euro zone partners and investors that Spain is doing its deficit-cutting homework despite a recession and 25 percent unemployment.

Fresh data on Tuesday suggested Spain will miss its public deficit target of 6.3 percent of gross domestic product this year, as the central government deficit reached 4.77 percent at the end of August, already higher than the year-end target.

By front-loading the reforms Rajoy hopes to sell them to voters as home-grown rather than conditions imposed from outside. Diplomats reported intense last-minute pressure on Madrid from key euro zone policymakers to take tougher measures, notably on freezing pensions.

On Friday, Moody's will publish its latest review of Spain's credit rating, possibly downgrading the country's debt to junk status.

On the same day, an independent audit of Spain's banks will reveal how much money Madrid will need from a 100 billion euro ($129.62 billion) aid package that Europe has already approved for the euro zone's fourth biggest economy.

Spain's reluctance to seek a sovereign bailout - a condition for European Central Bank intervention to cut the country's borrowing costs - could propel the euro zone into deeper trouble.

Rajoy moved one step closer to requesting aid, suggesting in an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Wednesday that he would make the move if debt financing costs remained too high for too long.

"I can assure you 100 percent that I would ask for this bailout," he told the newspaper, calling the situation he faces right now "fascinating."

He also said he had not made his mind up on whether to maintain inflation indexation of pensions, which could cost the state an extra 6 billion euros this year.

"We need to be sufficiently flexible in order not to create any further problems," he said when asked about pensions.

His comments helped drive the premium investors demand to hold 10-year Spanish debt rather than benchmark German bonds up to 445 basis points on Wednesday, the highest level since early September.

Markets were also reacting to a letter from Germany, Finland and the Netherlands on Tuesday that implied that rescue funds Spain receives for its banks will remain on its public debt. The three said any future direct recapitalization of banks by the euro zone's bailout fund should not cover "legacy" problems.

CATALONIA INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT

The government's drive to rein in regional overspending as part of its austerity measures has prompted a flare-up in independence fervor in Catalonia, the wealthy northeastern region that generates one-fifth of Spain's economic output.

Just as the euro zone crisis has strained relations between wealthier nations of the north and heavily indebted countries to the south, Spain's crisis has aggravated tensions between the central government and its self-governing regions.

Catalonia is broke and needs a 5 billion euros bailout from the central state to meet debt payments this year, but Catalans are convinced they bear an unfairly large share of the country's tax burden.

More than half say they want independence from Spain, the highest level ever.

Artur Mas, the conservative president of Catalonia, announced on Tuesday he would hold early elections in November after Rajoy rejected his call for more tax autonomy.

The vote, likely to be presented politically as a referendum for secession, is a challenge to Rajoy, who's People's Party has threatened to take central control over the budgets of regions like Catalonia that fail to meet deficit reduction targets.

Catalonia would face a number of constitutional hurdles to secede, and such an outcome is seen as unlikely any time soon.

Analysts say Mas is using the growing independence sentiment as a threat over Madrid to secure more fiscal autonomy.

"At a time when the PP could use the crisis to limit autonomy in the regions, Mas is engaged in a defensive move to try to shift things the other way," said Enric Juliana, Madrid bureau chief for Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia.

COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS

Anti-austerity groups planned a fresh demonstration on Wednesday evening in Madrid, a day after police fired rubber bullets at thousands of protesters who tried to form a human chain around the parliament building.

Police arrested 28 protesters on Tuesday and 64 police and demonstrators were injured in the clashes.

The relatively small but intense protests this week have added to Rajoy's image problems abroad.

Officials in Brussels and Berlin have accused him of failing to sell his reforms effectively, partly because of confusing messages from his separate treasury and economy ministers and from his own office.

"The problem in the structure of his economic cabinet is transmitting a confused, improvised image," said an economist, who did not want to be named and who said Rajoy will have to name a powerful economic deputy by the end of the year to sort out his communications issues.

The governments of Ireland, Portugal and Greece were all voted out of office after they sought bailouts from Europe.

But Rajoy may have more staying power, especially if he negotiates a bailout "lite", such as a precautionary credit line from the European bailout fund that would not involve taking Spain out of the credit markets.

The uncharismatic conservative has more than three years left to his term and his People's Party has firm control of parliament, with no signs so far of party splits that might force him out early.

Obama at U.N. calls for end to intolerance, warns Iran

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - President Barack Obama urged world leaders on Tuesday to put an end to the intolerance and violence that led to the recent killing of the U.S. ambassador in Libya and warned Iran he would do what it takes to prevent Tehran from getting nuclear arms.

In a 30-minute address to the 193-nation U.N. General Assembly, Obama called anew for the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad following an 18-month civil war without saying how to make it happen. He also offered no fresh ideas on solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Beginning and ending his remarks by evoking Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya who died with three other Americans in a September 11 assault on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Obama called on nations to fight such violence.

"Today, we must affirm that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens, and not by his killers," said Obama, who seeks re-election on November 6. "Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations."

While condemning the violence sparked by a video made in California that depicts the Prophet Mohammad as a womanizer, fool and child abuser, several Muslim leaders called for international action to outlaw acts of blasphemy.

U.S. missions also came under attack in Egypt, Tunisia, Indonesia and other Muslim nations.

Obama - while repeating his condemnations of the video as "crude and disgusting" and stressing that the U.S. government had nothing to do with its production - staunchly defended free speech.

"The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech - the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy," Obama said.

Saying it is necessary to "honestly address the tensions between the West and the Arab world" moving toward democracy, Obama said he did not expect everyone to agree with him.

"However, I do believe that it is the obligation of all leaders in all countries to speak out forcefully against violence and extremism," he said. "There is no speech that justifies mindless violence."

'CALL ME AWFUL THINGS'

"As president of our country and commander-in-chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so," Obama said, drawing applause and some laughter.

The U.S. view, however, was not embraced by all sides at the General Assembly.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai took aim both at the anti-Islam video and publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad - the latter occurring most recently in France.

Karzai called the insults to the faith of 1.5 billion Muslims, the "depravity of fanatics," and added: "Such acts can never be justified as freedom of speech or expression."

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said violence could not be condoned, but he added that "the international community must not become (a) silent observer and should criminalize such acts that destroy the peace of the world and endanger the world security by misusing freedom of expression."

Egypt's new president, Mohamed Mursi, said freedom of expression carried with it responsibilities, and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, president of the world's most-populous Muslim-majority nation, Indonesia, called for a binding international treaty to "prevent incitement to hostility or violence based on religions or beliefs."

Earlier on Tuesday in Geneva, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation - the world's largest Islamic body, representing 56 countries - called for expressions of "Islamophobia" to be curbed by law in the same way as some countries restrict anti-Semitic speech or Holocaust denial.

Obama offered no fresh ideas on how to solve two crises - the civil war in Syria and the suspicion that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons - that the U.N. Security Council has been unable to resolve.

On Monday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke of Israel being "eliminated" and said he did not take seriously its threats to strike Iran's nuclear facilities. He said his nation is committed to seeking a negotiated solution.

Iran says its nuclear program is solely for peaceful uses such as generating electricity or producing medical isotopes.

"Let me be clear: America wants to resolve this issue through diplomacy and we believe that there is still time and space to do so. But that time is not unlimited," Obama said.

"The United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," he added, without providing specifics.

'THE BLOODSHED IN SYRIA'

While some nations, notably in the Arab world, have called for more international action to stop the violence in Syria, the U.N. Security Council has been deadlocked, and Russia and China have vetoed three resolutions condemning Assad's government. Qatar said it was time for action outside the United Nations.

"I think that it is better for the Arab countries themselves to interfere out of their national, humanitarian, political and military duties and do what is necessary to stop the bloodshed in Syria," Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani said.

Syria has accused Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey of supplying arms to the Syrian rebels.

The United Nations must immediately provide protection to areas liberated by rebels in Syria, French President Francois Hollande told the General Assembly.

U.S. officials have privately made clear that they have no appetite for a military intervention without U.N. sanction in another Muslim country just as they have wound down the U.S. war in Iraq and are largely pulling out of Afghanistan by 2014.

"The international community should not look the other way as violence spirals out of control," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff sounded a note of caution. "There is no military solution to the Syrian crisis," she told the General Assembly. "Diplomacy and dialogue are not just our best option, they are the only option."

A year after the Palestinians mounted an ultimately failed effort for U.N. membership, Obama passed quickly over the Arab-Israeli conflict.

"The road is hard, but the destination is clear - a secure Jewish state of Israel and an independent, prosperous Palestine," Obama said. "America will walk alongside all who are prepared to make that journey."

Ban offered a pessimistic assessment, suggesting that time has nearly run out for such a negotiated solution. "The two-state solution is the only sustainable option. Yet the door may be closing, for good," he said.

Formatting eBooks?for Newbs ? Speaking to the Eyes

Last time, we spoke about the very basics of doing a book cover?today, another integral piece of the puzzle, formatting!

Before I got into e-publishing, I thought I knew what publishers wanted when you submit your manuscript. There are certain protocols you?re supposed to follow?name in the upper left corner, word count in the upper right, etc. The purpose of this is for the agent or publisher to have a quick reference, and for the editor to be able to easily get around your work. In e-publishing, though, the writer is filling most of those roles, so the game is completely different.

So why not just write the book in MS Word the way you want it to look, upload it to Kobo or Amazon, and press publish?

If you do that, I?ll guarantee you one thing: the end product will look horrible.

The thing is, a lot of the formatting in MS Word?or other word processors for that matter?is done in the background, where you can?t see it. Here?s an experiment: go to the View tab,

Word Formatting Marks

Formatting Marks: note there are even dots to indicate the space between words.

and find the option that shows your formatting marks. (In Word, go to Options, Display, and Show All Formatting Marks.) Your manuscript will be riddled with symbols; this is coding Word inputs into your file as you?re writing to determine what the output will look like. What many people don?t realize is that Word is not a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get program. Far from it!

Here?s another experiment. Copy a paragraph of your manuscript, open a blank file in Notepad, and paste it. The text should go, unbroken, on one line, and you?ll have to scroll to the right to see it all. This is because .txt files, unlike files from word processors, don?t have ?Word Wrap,? meaning that the text will go on forever until a new paragraph is started. Looks hard to read, right? Surely we want our manuscripts to ?wrap? when we format them for eBooks, right?

Actually, no. The thing is, there?s no standard for electronic books. Many?I?d even say most?go with the ePub format, while others?like the ubiquitous Amazon Kindle books?are .mobi files. There are several other formats; the point is, they?re all programmed differently. So when you upload a particular file to, say, Kobo, it might look vastly different when Amazon gets a hold of it. The difference comes in how those files interact with the formatting marks I mentioned earlier.

I haven?t experimented with every kind of file, so I can?t tell you yet which works best?what I can say is that, for the sake of your own sanity, the easiest thing to do is start with a raw file. I do a lot of my writing in MS Word through Google Docs?because it?s accessible anywhere, even on my phone?and copy and paste the text into Scrivener. Scrivener can output into several file types, including Real Text Format (rtf) or the MS Word .doc. Of, you can export it as a text file. This is the raw text?no formatting at all.

What I?ve been doing is exporting as a text file, then opening up a program called Sigil, a WYSIWYG editor (unlike Word!). Sigilis basically an HTML editor, meaning you?ll be coding in the same way you would a web page?or an eBook. It?s really simple to use, and you don?t need any experience with HTML. Just copy and paste your work, create headings (which will create a table of contents for you), and images if you have them, italicize and bold your text if need be. That?s it! There?s a handy tutorial here, and the whole process isn?t very long or arduous (though poetry is another story?it took a while to get Muzak for the Metro to look right).

It might even be simpler, though. I haven?t tried it yet, but I imagine you could output your Scrivener files as an eBook, which would open in Sigil. This way, you do most of your formatting as you work in Scrivener, and use Sigil for touch-ups.

Once that?s done, you use Calibre to tweak things like metadata and making sure everything is ?just so.? But that?s a topic for another post.

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to eBook formatting, but it?s a start, and it?s a lot easier than some might lead you to believe. If you want to check out a sample of just how this turns out, you can go to Amazon to find the eBook I created with this process (including a cover) this weekend, Muzak for the Metro. It?s only $0.99, and it includes a poem that wasn?t in the original collection?plus an excerpt from ?Room With a Corpse,? a short story which will appear in my forthcoming collection The Astrologers and Other Stories. Check it out!

Career Chick Chat: How I found my business network

Do you remember the scene in Shrek (the first movie) when Donkey was making an absolute pest of himself, jumping up and down behind all the fairy-tale creatures, repeatedly, until in the end he wore Shrek down and was picked to go on the quest to find Lord Farquaad?

Hilarious, but not so funny was that this was how I saw business networking for many years.

?I was at a sales conference many years ago, the dinner was over, the speeches were done and we were meant to be ?networking?.?

I can still recall looking across the room and seeing a number of my colleagues gathered around the management team, and rather like Donkey, trying to be seen and impress how clever, witty or capable they thought they were.

I didn?t want to do that. I didn?t know how to do that (what on earth do you say, I wondered?) and frankly, I didn?t think that the end of a long day after a couple of red wines was the time for a best-impression.?

So I chatted for a while and made my excuses.

Which I also did on many a Friday night when the sales team I worked in was headed down the pub to ?network'? with the support staff and technicians who looked after our customers.

I don?t know about you but by Friday night I?m done. I had friends to catch up with, grocery shopping to do, dinner to cook or even some stolen moments in front of the TV to fit in. I?d worked long and hard enough by Friday night and I wanted to go home. ?You need to network? I was told when I declined yet another Friday night invitation and headed off to my life ? now feeling guilty that somehow I wasn?t fitting in everything I needed to do. I also felt incredibly uncomfortable going to ?networking? events where I?d go home with a pile of business cards and no idea what to do with them.

Everyone tells you that it?s important to network.?

And I truly believe it is.?

When you develop deep business relationships, they are an unbelievable and generous source of information, ideas, contacts and even support when things don?t go your way. I thought I was missing out big time. And then one-day I woke up (it wasn't just one-day, but you get the gist!) and discovered that I had an enormous network. I just hadn?t realised it.

I had worked at the one organisation for many years and worked with and for many great people.

I?d had coffee and lunches with them, worked on exciting and successful projects and on others that were stressful and hard work; laughed with them, helped them and been helped by them.?

Along the way my connections with the ?people I worked with? and ?people I met through work? had developed into deep mutually beneficial business relationships (and some into friends ? but that?s another story) ? and hey, presto - I did have a network! It took moving away from the day-to-day contact for me to realise that?s what they were. The clues about how to keep them in my network were in the past ? a coffee here, a lunch there, an occasional email on topics of mutual interest and I was networking. It just took a bit more thought and organisation than when they were sitting in the same office.

The real surprise came when I moved to my next company and realised that it was expected that I would still be keeping up with past colleagues and the last industry I had worked in. Woo Hoo!?

Networking was a legitimate activity I was meant to be doing as part of working in business. I didn?t have to sneak out at lunch time, make excuses or feel guilty! My network has changed as I, and the ?people-I-know? have progressed in our careers, I?ve met new people and my network now extends to people in all sorts of jobs and organisations and many are scattered all over the world. I do attend a couple of formal networking organisations now because I met some new great people that I share interests with - and it's fun. It?s my network ? why shouldn?t it be? And not a donkey in sight!

- Karen

Internet Marketing Strategies: Have Multiple Benefits For Your ...

Some businesses will expand to huge proportions, while others will stay small and local. However, some small businesses simply fade away. A large percentage of all businesses, including online businesses, fail. Avoid failure by using these great marketing tips.

Conducting business online can often seem very impersonal. This is an important strategy for smaller, independent businesses who want to create personal relationships with customers for retention purposes.

Make sure to keep very detailed records of all aspects of your business. This should include everything from sales and refunds to referrals and traffic. When you stockpile these stats, you can read them and deduce vital information about what?s working for you and what isn?t. If you need to improve something, you can find out which areas need improvement and how you can improve them.

If you know what kind of lingo people use when talking about the brand you are selling you can use it in your ads. This can help you make deeper connections with your readers by speaking in the way they speak, in the language they use. Proper word usage goes a long way in representing your business.

Long before site ranking becomes a concern for you, you need to build yourself an outstanding website. This needs to be the first thing anyone does in online business. The easier your site is to navigate and operate, the less tweaking you?ll need to do in the future.

A frequently-asked questions page (FAQ) makes an excellent model for your Internet marketing content. You can write the questions with the answers already in mind, and use them to advertise your products! Suggest one of your products for a particular issue or problem. Write questions in a way that you can have the chance to mention the product when answering without making it seem like a product placement.

Emails are really important when establishing an Internet marketing campaign. You need to ensure that your mail stays safe. Don?t use free email services that lack functions that you need, such as the ability to store mail indefinitely. If you want the most security and the most features for your mail, try setting up your own archiving service by using an actual web host?s features instead of those free mail services.

Record a video of you demonstrating the product you are attempting to sell. This will give your customers a good idea of how your products work. You can highlight the features and benefits that might not be in the product description. You will be able to show the video on your blog or company social media sites.

Take the time to learn the basics involved with designing websites. A tremendous source of information is available online where you can find excellent tutorials on learning HTML, CSS and everything else that goes into designing web pages. Dedicate a certain amount of time each day to learning web design and your website will be reaping the benefits before you know it.

If you don?t devote your full attention to all of your social media profiles it will be a detriment to your company. Profiles that are stagnant are considered to be spam.

Do not discard your projects when they don?t initially appear fruitful. Just because a method didn?t work before does not mean it is doomed to fail. The Internet evolves daily. Do not spend time and money on things that do not really work and focus on efficient techniques instead.

Provide an easy way for others to link back to your website by providing an attractive link-back button. Those who enjoy your site will be able to provide a link back to you by simply clicking that button you have provided. Then, anyone who visits their site will see your link and possibly decide to click on the link and visit your site. They might even decide to link back to your site themselves.

Learn from others? mistakes and make their failure work to your advantage. Use the tips here to make yourself a winner
