Your Workout Could Be Even Better if You Put This Very Surprising ...

When you work out, how important to you is it to have music? I have to admit, it's usually at the top of my ready-to-work-out list, and I get a little bummed if I can't find my headphones en route to the gym (this happens way too often! I even bought headphones in neon blue/hot pink so they'd be easy to spot--works about 35 percent of the time).

classical-music-exercise

Research has shown that music is a definite workout helper--it can trick you into thinking you're not working as hard, while increasing your endurance by as much as 15 percent. And now new research is showing that there are added benefits with a very particular kind of music: classical!

According to neuroscientist Jack Lewis (who was commissioned for the study by rara.com):

?Energetic but not overly-fast classical music can be ideal in the gym. Not only does upbeat music increase speed, strength and endurance, but the relaxing qualities of classical music appear to reduce heart rate, blood pressure and lower perceived exertion, at the same time."

He adds that relaxing music, such as classical music, can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Specifically, Lewis suggests busting out Beethoven's Symphony No. 4, fourth movement--once it gets going, the piece is set to about 140-144 bpm, which should match your mid-workout heartrate.

And there are other classical pieces set to the same general beat:

OK, I love classical music--my husband is a violinist and conductor, so there's always the sound of Mozart (or Debussy or Vivaldi or...) in our house. (I also played the viola for a long time and I like to tell myself that it's like riding a bike and I'll totally start playing again any second now.) But I think it would be a little weird to have a rousing spin class set to the music of Rachmaninoff.

But maybe not! I'm going to put some on my workout playlist. It'll just be interwoven with some of the embarrassing songs that happen to be on there already. (Which we all have! Um, we do all have them, right?)

And speaking of playlists...today, Spotify announced its top 10 streamed workout songs. What do you think--do you agree with any of these?

  • Die Young by Ke$ha

  • Scream & Shout by will.i.am

  • Thrift Shop by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

  • Don't You Worry Child by Swedish House Mafia

  • Sweet Nothing by Calvin Harris

  • I Cry by Flo Rida

  • Clique by Kanye West

  • Titanium by David Guetta

  • Gangnam Style by Psy

  • Locked Out Of Heaven by Bruno Mars

What do you think? Would you put some classical music on your playlist--or do you have some there already? And are any of these other songs already on your list?

Troops shoot one dead in west Myanmar: govt official

One person was shot dead by Myanmar troops in a confrontation with Muslim villagers in the violence-hit western state of Rakhine, a government official said Tuesday.

The incident happened on Monday in an area home to a large population of Rohingya Muslims, who are considered by Myanmar officials as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and often referred to as Bengalis.

"About 20 Bengalis tried to attack soldiers. A person was wounded when soldiers fired warning shots," said the official, who did not want to be named, adding that the person died on the way to hospital.

The circumstances of the incident were unclear, but local government spokesman Win Myaing said a confrontation occurred when forest department officials tried to visit the area for an inspection.

Buddhist-Muslim clashes have left at least 180 people dead in Rakhine since June. More than 110,000 people, mostly Rohingya, have been displaced and thousands have fled by boat overseas, mostly heading for Malaysia.

In August New York-based Human Rights Watch accused Myanmar security forces of opening fire on Rohingya with live ammunition.

Myanmar denies citizenship to its roughly 800,000 Rohingya, who are described by the UN as among the most persecuted minority groups in the world.

As Chicago-area refinery grows, historic town fears for its future ...

EAST CHICAGO, Indiana ? Billowing plumes of white steam swirl around the towering steel matrix at the BP Whiting oil refinery, while blossoms of orange flame from flares light up the cold night sky.

This is the backdrop to Marktown, an unusual enclave built in 1917 to house employees of a nearby steel mill owned by Chicago industrialist Clayton Mark.

About a quarter of the pastel, stucco Marktown homes are now vacant and crumbling. There is a general appearance of abandonment and decay. But on the evening of Jan. 23 the Marktown community center was bustling, packed with residents confused and alarmed about the news circulating over the past few days.

?This is more people than I?ve ever seen in Marktown,? remarked one local, who declined to give his name.

Kim Rodriguez, a 54-year-old lifelong resident, had called the meeting to try to save the neighborhood.

That?s because BP officials recently acknowledged they are looking to buy up and raze Marktown homes.

Since its founding, Marktown has been surrounded on all sides by heavy industry. But BP?s $3.8 billion expansion to process Canadian tar sands oil means the refinery is now much closer to the historic district, separated from the northwest edge of town only by 129th Street and a relatively narrow green space.

Rumors had swirled for a few weeks about BP?s meetings with several local residents, including at least one man who had approached the company seeking to sell numerous properties and another, history buff Paul Myers, who is passionate about preserving Marktown. A Jan. 15 story in the Times of Northwest Indiana stoked residents? fears.

Between the many boarded-up, disintegrating buildings and the looming refinery ? not to mention a tin plant, the ArcelorMittal steel mill, BP tank farms and other industry nearby ? Marktown isn?t what most people would consider idyllic.

But it is also a place rich with history, where neighbors know each other, large extended families live in multiple houses on the same block, and a spacious home can be purchased for less than $20,000.

It is a place that Rodriguez said she will not leave, no matter what.

?Marktown is once again in crisis,? she told the about 70 residents at the meeting. ?BP is planning to purchase our homes one by one and tear them down.?

A showdown to come

BP spokesman Scott Dean said in an email that the company is ?interested in the properties along its boundaries? to provide additional green space, as well as parking and equipment-staging areas for the refinery.

?The modernization project will create additional production activity inside the refinery adjacent to Marktown, including increased rail traffic adjacent to Marktown and barge traffic on the Indiana Harbor Ship canal adjacent to Marktown.? He said they will work with ?willing sellers? and offer fair market value.

Residents who don?t want to leave their homes can simply refuse to sell to BP. But attendees at the meeting clearly saw themselves facing a major showdown with the powerful company. They think that two men who own numerous buildings and do not live in the neighborhood will sell their properties, and they worry BP officials will tempt or pressure other residents to sell.

?Someone might think, ?Oh $15,000, I?ll be rich!?? said Yaya Torres, 33, who grew up in Marktown and now raises her son in a house near her parents. ?That?s all the homes are appraised at here, and that doesn?t even pay rent [elsewhere] for two years.?

The more homes that are sold and demolished, the harder it will be for remaining residents to jumpstart a rehabilitation of Marktown. Rodriguez, Myers and other residents have been pushing for comprehensive restoration for more than a decade. In 2008 they drafted a formal revitalization plan.

Historic significance

The non-profit preservation group Indiana Landmarks holds conservation easements on a number of Marktown properties, and Indiana Landmarks northwest field office director Tiffany Tolbert attended the meeting to tell residents ?we are prepared to protect those if it comes down to it.?

Indiana Landmarks twice named Marktown among the state?s 10 most endangered landmarks, and Marktown was also named one of the ?Seven Wonders of Northwest Indiana? in 2007 by the by the Times of Northwest Indiana newspaper.

In 1975 Marktown ? which is officially part of the city of East Chicago, while the refinery is in adjacent Whiting ? was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. That means federal resources cannot be used for redeveloping or destroying structures.

But the historic designation offers no such protection against private development or demolition by an entity like BP.

Dean said that, ?BP respects the historical designation of the Marktown Community and is exploring preliminary possibilities related to the historic designation,? though he also said that ?once acquired, the property would be razed.?

A month earlier, sitting at her kitchen table surrounded by Christmas decorations and countless family photos, Rodriguez reminisced about her childhood in Marktown. Ice-skating on the frozen flooded basketball court, playing ping pong in the community center and buying snacks at the local bar, where kids were allowed as long as they didn?t sit on the stools.

?This is my home, the only place I know,? she said. ?I know there?s a big world out there, but it scares me. When it comes to trying to take Marktown from us, I?m going to fight them. If I lose in the end, I?m going down with it.?

At the meeting, Rodriguez pleaded with other residents to join her.

?I need your help to do this,? she said, standing below a construction paper sign saying ?Kids Against Bullying.? ?How important are your homes to you? How important is the Marktown community? I will go to bat for each and every one of you, but I can?t do it alone?otherwise my home might be the only one left standing there.?

A ?step child? or a priority?

It looked like Rodriguez had no shortage of supporters. Rosendo Cuevas, an East Chicago city councilman, asked for a show of hands from people who want to hold on to their homes. About half the crowd responded.

?If the people stand united, it?s not going to be an easy fight for BP,? he said.

Another East Chicago city council member, Benita White Arnold, urged the residents to develop a phone tree and plan of action.

?BP has a lot of bad PR out there, they don?t need this in the newspaper,? she said. ?Don?t let them do those trickery things where they don?t give you any time to organize?Don?t let them catch you sleeping, be awake.?

Three of East Chicago?s nine city council members were at the meeting, along with at least one former council member. While they expressed their support for saving Marktown, numerous residents complained that the East Chicago city administration has long ?treated Marktown as a stepchild,? in the words of resident Javier Madrigal.

The next evening, Jan. 24, the East Chicago redevelopment commissioner held a community meeting regarding an unrelated redevelopment plan for the town?s North Harbor area. Rodriguez and about 10 other Marktown residents attended, seemingly outnumbering North Harbor residents and peppering commissioner Maria Becerra with questions. Becerra said she hadn?t been aware of the BP situation or the previous Marktown redevelopment proposal, but would look into it.

Torres, who works as a trainer in an early childhood education program in Chicago, said she does eventually want to move away from Marktown, ?but I don?t want to sell my house to BP, I want to sell it to a family that wants it. I want to be able to bring my son back here and show him where I grew up.?

Union Membership Drops Nationwide

WSIL -- ?Union membership nationwide has been dropping steadily. It has now fallen to what's believed to be the lowest level in 80 years.
?
Illinois leads the country in the loss of union members, down by 75,000 people since 2011. At the same time, the state ranks third in the country for union membership.
?
Some sectors are taking big hits, while others have been stable.
?
The Illinois Education Association represents teachers in many Southern Illinois school districts.
?
"I think we have to get back in touch with the new generation," said IEA Field Director Jim Clark.
?
Over the past 30 years, the organization has grown.
?
"In 1982, IEA had 50,000 members," said Clark. "Today, we're in the 130,000."
?
Clark has watched the movement develop. He believes the union plays an important part in the classroom.
?
"Sometimes the problem isn't you," said Clark, "It's the system. So how do you change the system? Well you need collective purpose and collective action."
?
The IEA is bucking the trend, though.
?
Union membership on a national scale is shrinking. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a yearly drop of about 400,000 people. More than 35 percent of public sector employees belong to a union, compared to less than 7% in the private sector.
?
"Once the union goes away, wages come down again, benefits go down again," said IEA UniServ Director Matthew Johansson.
?
Johansson believes the recession could be playing a role in the latest numbers.
????
"People feel so grateful just to have a job that they are willing to put up with extra tasks," said Johansson.
?
Johansson feels that some of the recent numbers are part of a cycle. He believes attitudes toward unions and what they bring are always shifting.
????
"We're going through a transition, especially generationally," said Johansson, "We have the baby boomers that are leaving, and they for a long time were the leaders."
?
While the IEA hasn't experienced the nationwide decline, they are still working to recruit new teachers. They also want to give them the tools to stay in their career long-term.
?
"We have mentoring and professional development," said Johansson. "Those are things we have to really look at."

Money finance: Benefits of investment in indian real estate market

For the huge profits and the high returns on their investments, the real estate market in India is booming and investors are increasingly attracted towards it. The domestic and overseas investors are interested in this market in spite of it being a fragmented industry with high transaction costs and an absence of complete transparency. By the current trend, one can well guess that the country is going in the right direction and more people will be interested to invest in real estate here. It is also true that India offers the maximum benefits to the investors and it also offers the most suitable environment. India being a large democratic country and it having a good governing and legal system have contributed to more people getting attracted towards it for investment and the real estate market is gaining heights here. The country also provides legal protection for intellectual property rights. No other business in the country is is as lucrative and revenue generating as real estate business. Investment in real estate involves hospitals, resorts, hotels, educational institutions and housing and commercial properties. The minimum mandatory area to allow FDI in real estate has been reduced by the government from 100 acres to 25 acres. Now more investment properties are available with investment securities. The major developments includes floating of real estate funds by financial institutions, big investments being made by private equity players and loans being given by banks to builders. Among the international investors that are showing interest are included Morgan Stanley Real Estate Fund (MSREF), Blackstone Group, JP Morgan Partners, Amaranth Advisors, Columbia Endowment Fund, Broadstreet and Warburg Pincus. Better Returns:

As compared to stocks and bonds, real estate sector gives higher returns. Over the years real estate sectors have given 10-20% returns and this is going to grow in the coming years.

Huge Demand:

By a report, there is a shortage of 26.53 million houses during the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-12). Thus there is a huge demand for residential properties and this demand provides a big investment opportunity for the investors.

Tax benefits:

By investing in real estate, there are two ways in which one gets huge tax benefits. One way is that tax benefits are available on interest on housing loans that are available in India and the other way is that tax exemption is available on reinvestment of sale proceeds of property in other allowed ways available on interest on housing loans that are available in India and the other way is that tax exemption is available on reinvestment of sale proceeds of property in other allowed ways.

More cash flow with inflation:

With inflation, rents usually increase while mortgage payments on the property remain stable. There is increase in cash flow and for holding the property; there is more rent income without more expense. There are more renters when there is inflation as affordability is negatively impacted by inflation and as there are more renters, there is more demand. So rents can increase.

Government Initiatives:

The many progressive measures introduced by the government will lead to a huge demand of residential and commercial properties and will provide more returns to the investors.

Scandal-hit Monte Paschi seeks new investor to revive bank

MILAN (Reuters) - Italian bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena is seeking a financial investor to help revive the ailing lender and will remove a current cap on voting rights to help raise 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion), its chairman said.

"I would like to have a long-term financial investor," Alessandro Profumo told Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore in an interview published on Sunday. "Nationality is not a problem. The important thing is that it believes in our project".

Late on Saturday the Bank of Italy gave its approval to Monte Paschi's request for 3.9 billion euros ($5.3 billion) of state loans, which Profumo said would be issued by February.

The central bank's backing was the final stage required to free up the financial help for Italy's third-biggest lender, which this week revealed loss-making derivatives trades that could cost it about 720 million euros.

In October, investors cleared a 1 billion euro share issue as part of its business plan, which Profumo said would be launched by the end of 2015.

Shareholders in the world's oldest bank on Friday approved two additional capital boosting measures for a combined 6.5 billion euros to be used in case the bank is not able to pay back the loans and interest with cash.

Profumo said he was confident the bank would generate enough cash to pay back the state bailout over the next five years and may not need to turn to investors to raise the 6.5 billion euros, which he described "theoretical" guarantees.

"We believe in this. The objective is to return to profits already during the course of this year," he said.

The bank will remove its current 4 percent cap to voting rights before launching the 1 billion euro cash call, he added. The move would encourage investors who could end up with more than 4 percent stakes to participate.

The scandal around opaque Monte Paschi trades is widening fast and Italian media have reported that public prosecutors are investigating a large number of derivatives contracts.

The issue has shot to the centre of the campaign for next month's national election and has prompted questions about how the deals, which were conducted between 2006 and 2009 and involved Japanese bank Nomura and Deutsche Bank, could have been hidden from regulators.

Monte Paschi was already under investigation over its 9 billion euro cash acquisition of smaller lender Antonveneta from Spain's Santander in 2007.

In an interview with La Repubblica daily on Sunday, Monte Paschi Chief Executive Fabrizio Viola said he had no evidence at this time that any crime had been committed, but the bank would not hesitate to protect its interests by taking legal action should any crime be ascertained by judges. Accused Zumba pimp trial begins in disorder

Robert F. Bukaty / AP

Mark Strong Sr., right, and his attorney, Dan Lilley, leave the Cumberland County Court House, on Jan. 18, in Portland, Maine.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

It takes 12 to tango.

The prosecution of Mark Strong, who has been accused of helping a Maine woman run a prostitution ring from her Zumba workout studio, has run up against an unexpected series of complications this week as the court failed to seat a jury.

Topping the problems off on Friday, Judge Nancy Mills unexpectedly dropped 46 of the 59 misdemeanor counts against Strong ? spurring an immediate appeal by attorneys for the state.

Prosecutors say that the men of Maine were knocking down the doors of Alexis Wright?s Pura Vida dance and exercise studio between Oct. 2010 and Feb. 2012, and that Strong helped Wright run a prostitution ring from the storefront in the seaside town of Kennebunk.

Strong pleaded not guilty in October to 59 counts including promotion of prostitution and conspiracy to commit promotion of prostitution.

All of the 46 counts against Strong dropped by Mills on Friday were invasion of privacy charges related to allegations that Wright videotaped herself with clients.

A separate trial for Wright, who has pleaded not guilty to 106 counts, including 45 counts of engaging in prostitution, is not expected to begin until May.

But four days after Strong?s case was supposed to get under way, the high-publicity, slow-simmering case of small-town indiscretion still does not have a jury.

As of Friday, zero jurors had been seated out of a pool of 140 after a series of closed-door selection proceedings, director of court information Mary Ann Lynch confirmed in an email.

The case in Mills? court also drew into itself, lobster pot-like, a new round of court filings as Maine Today Media, which owns the local Portland Press Herald, filed to put a stop to the secret voir dire hearings.

After Maine Today Media protested on Tuesday, a trial court at first agreed to open the proceedings, but Strong and his attorney objected, expressing ?concerns about the ability to draw an impartial jury if the process used by the court were changed,? according to court documents.

In an affidavit filed Tuesday by Maine Today Media, reporter Scott Dolan said that jury selection went on in the courthouse?s basement while members of the press sat in the hallway outside an empty courtroom.

The closed door sessions were finally halted on Thursday, when the state?s highest court ruled in a 6-1 decision that they had to be opened to the public.

?Everything I?ve done in the past few days has been appealed,? Justice Mills said in court at one point Thursday, according to the Press Herald.

The decision to open up the hearings was precedent-setting for Maine, said Sigmund Schutz, counsel to the Press Herald.

??It?s going to ensure that all aspects of the Alexis Wright trial are conducted in public, at least unless the court makes a decision to the contrary,? he told NBCNews.com.

While it is unclear how long it may take to prepare the court-ordered transcripts of the jury hearings held so far, a confidential juror questionnaire given to the pool was released on Wednesday.

The questionnaire listed 47 people accused of being clients of Wright, and asked if the potential jurors had ever discussed the individual?s cases with friends, family, or co-workers. It also asked if they knew or were related to any of the 72 people who may be called as witnesses in the case.

?You may be shown explicit videos and photographs depicting individuals engaged in graphic sexual acts,? the questionnaire asked. ?Would viewing this evidence make it difficult for you to listen to the law and evidence and render a fair and impartial verdict??

The questionnaire warned of as many as three weeks of testimony, from Wednesday of this week through Friday. Feb. 8. Court broke for the day Friday without a clear date for when testimony may actually begin, Lynch confirmed.

Also in the questionnaire: ?If the evidence shows that Alexis Wright was a prostitute, would the fact that defendant Mark Strong had a sexual relationship with her, not for money, make it difficult for you to find defendant Mark Strong not guilty of the crime of promotion of prostitution??

And: ?Do you know Alexis Wright or any member of her family??

That question gets to the crux of problem with finding jurors: Many townspeople may have gotten to know Alexis Wright all too well -- or known someone who has.

And putting a lid on rampant gossip about the trial might be beyond Mills? powers. The superior court in Alfred, Maine is only about 15 miles from where Wright operated her Zumba studio in Kennebunk.

The close-knit town of 10,000 was rattled when police began releasing the names of Wright?s alleged clients in October, in one case leading to a local high school hockey coach stepping down from his job.

??Are you a close friend or family member of any other member of the jury pool?? asked the questionnaire jurors were given. ?Do you work with any member of the jury pool??

In fact, Strong?s attorney argued in a motion filed earlier this month that it would be ?impossible? to find a York County jury free of some sort of bias against his client.

Climate change beliefs of independent voters shift with the weather

Jan. 24, 2013 ? There's a well-known saying in New England that if you don't like the weather here, wait a minute. When it comes to independent voters, those weather changes can just as quickly shift beliefs about climate change.

New research from the University of New Hampshire finds that the climate change beliefs of independent voters are dramatically swayed by short-term weather conditions. The research was conducted by Lawrence Hamilton, professor of sociology and senior fellow at the Carsey Institute, and Mary Stampone, assistant professor of geography and the New Hampshire state climatologist.

"We find that over 10 surveys, Republicans and Democrats remain far apart and firm in their beliefs about climate change. Independents fall in between these extremes, but their beliefs appear weakly held -- literally blowing in the wind. Interviewed on unseasonably warm days, independents tend to agree with the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change. On unseasonably cool days, they tend not to," Hamilton and Stampone say.

Hamilton and Stampone used statewide data from about 5,000 random-sample telephone interviews conducted on 99 days over two and a half years (2010 to 2012) by the Granite State Poll. They combined the survey data with temperature and precipitation indicators derived from New Hampshire's U.S. Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) station records. Survey respondents were asked whether they thought climate change is happening now, caused mainly by human activities. Alternatively, respondents could state that climate change is not happening, or that it is happening but mainly for natural reasons.

Unseasonably warm or cool temperatures on the interview day and previous day seemed to shift the odds of respondents believing that humans are changing the climate. However, when researchers broke these responses down by political affiliation (Democrat, Republican or independent), they found that temperature had a substantial effect on climate change views mainly among independent voters.

"Independent voters were less likely to believe that climate change was caused by humans on unseasonably cool days and more likely to believe that climate change was caused by humans on unseasonably warm days. The shift was dramatic. On the coolest days, belief in human-caused climate change dropped below 40 percent among independents. On the hottest days, it increased above 70 percent," Hamilton says.

New Hampshire's self-identified independents generally resemble their counterparts on a nationwide survey that asked the same questions, according to the researchers. Independents comprise 18 percent of the New Hampshire estimation sample, compared with 17 percent nationally. They are similar with respect to education, but slightly older, and more balanced with respect to gender.

In conducting their analysis, the researchers took into account other factors such as education, age, and sex. They also made adjustments for the seasons, and for random variation between surveys that might be caused by nontemperature events.

Jindal: GOP should change 'just about everything'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is calling on the Republican Party to "recalibrate the compass of conservatism" as party leaders on Thursday promised fundamental changes to help stave off future losses.

The governor will deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting Thursday night in Charlotte, becoming the latest high-profile conservative from outside Washington to call for sweeping changes inside the GOP. In speech excerpts released earlier in the day, Jindal says the GOP doesn't need to change its values but "might need to change just about everything else we do."

"We do not need to change what we believe as conservatives ? our principles are timeless," Jindal says. "But we do need to re-orient our focus to the place where conservatism thrives: in the real world beyond the Washington Beltway."

Hours before the speech, Republican leaders promised to release in March a report, dubbed the "Growth and Opportunity Project," outlining recommendations on party rules and messaging designed to appeal to a rapidly changing American electorate. President Barack Obama's November victory was fueled, in part, by overwhelming support from the nation's Hispanic, Asian and African-American communities.

"Losing is not fun. We want to win," said GOP strategist Sally Bradshaw, who is among five people appointed by RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to craft the report.

"I think you're going to see a very renewed, aggressive effort by this party to put on a different face," Bradshaw said. "We are going to go into areas that we do not go into and see folks that we do not see."

Jindal, too, says the GOP is too focused on number-crunching on Capitol Hill and not focused enough on connecting with voters across the nation.

"Today's conservatism is completely wrapped up in solving the hideous mess that is the federal budget, the burgeoning deficits, the mammoth federal debt, the shortfall in our entitlement programs," he says. "We seem to have an obsession with government bookkeeping. This is a rigged game, and it is the wrong game for us to play."

The comments come a day after the House passed a bill to permit the government to borrow enough money to avoid a first-time default for at least four months, defusing a looming crisis setting up a springtime debate over taxes, spending and the deficit. The House passed the measure on a bipartisan basis as majority Republicans back away from their previous demand that any increase in the government's borrowing cap be paired with an equivalent level of spending cuts.

The Louisiana governor's comments follow criticism from another high-profile Republican based outside Washington who publicly blasted GOP leadership on Capitol Hill: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. One of the party's most popular voices, Christie earlier in the month criticized his party's "toxic internal politics" after House Republicans initially declined to approve disaster relief for victims of Superstorm Sandy. He said it was "disgusting to watch" their actions and he faulted the GOP's most powerful elected official, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Republican officials from across the country are gathering in North Carolina this week to begin shaping a path forward following their party's November shellacking.

GOP strategist Ari Fleischer suggested that his party could learn an important lesson from Democrats on messaging: "Republicans talk policy and Democrats talk people. Republicans can learn a little bit from Democrats on how to make those people connections with our policies."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., told reporters on the sidelines of the meeting Thursday that Republicans also need to develop a sound strategy for confronting the Obama administration, suggesting House Republicans could use hearings to expose waste and promote better ideas.

"A lot of Republicans, frankly, spent the last two years saying, 'Oh, gee, we don't have to do much because after Obama loses we'll work with the new Republican president.' Well, that world ain't there," Gingrich said. "So now they have to make adjustments. They've got to understand that this is a different game."

Strong turnout in Jordan's elections belies deep-seated cynicism

Jordanians turned out to vote in record numbers in yesterday's parliamentary elections, but many, even those who voted, see the system as stacked against change.

By Nicholas Seeley,?Correspondent / January 24, 2013

Jordanians arrive at a school to vote in Amman, Jordan, Wednesday. Jordanians voted yesterday in a first electoral test for their king's political reforms, while a boycott from his Islamist-led opponents cast doubt over whether the vote would quell two years of simmering dissent in the streets.

Mohammad Hannon/AP

By mid-afternoon yesterday, Mohammad Audeh still hadn't decided if he was going to vote or not. He said he didn?t see anyone he wanted to vote for as he hung around outside the polling station, watching as, according to him, candidates tried to buy votes from the young people in the neighborhood.

Eventually Mr. Audeh said he might vote anyway, on the off chance that these elections would be better than the corrupt contests of Jordan's past.

"The King has taken a lot of interest, and he is following it up. And the USA [is watching]," he said. "It might be decent."

Based on preliminary results from Jordan's parliamentary elections yesterday, the big winner seems to be the regime. Despite an election process that observers say remains deeply flawed, there was record-high turnout, bolstering the government's contention that reform-minded Jordanians are still looking to the system, rather than the opposition, for change.

Final turnout figures have not yet been released, but according to an electronic database created by Jordan's new Independent Election Commission ? one of the recent reforms ? nearly 57 percent of registered voters had cast ballots at the close of polling yesterday.

The Islamic Action Front, the country's main opposition party, boycotted the polls and claims the turnout figures are inflated. But while election observers remain highly critical of the voting process as a whole, they say they found no evidence of state manipulation of the results. Independent local election monitors estimated turnout to be between 50 and 51 percent, but stopped short of attributing that difference to inflation by the state.

"In most of the centers, the number [of voters listed on the official figures] was correct," says Mohammed Hussainy, the head of the Integrity Coalition for Election Observation. "We say clearly that, by Independent Election Commission at least, there was no systematic fraud. But the chaos that happened in the last few hours [of polling] created the possibility for fraud."

The Islamic party, who did not deploy poll observers on election day, say evidence of fraud will eventually come out. "There are no secrets in Jordan, and I'm positive in two or three days, everything will be out. We just have to wait and see," says Nimer Al-Assaf, the Islamic party's deputy secretary general.

He points out that even if the turnout numbers are correct, most Jordanians still did not vote ? only 2.2 million of Jordan's 3.6 million eligible voters were registered, and turnout percentages are based only on registered voters.

Beyond voting

Local and international groups praised the elections commission cautiously, saying this voting process was significantly better than previous ones, which were dogged by numerous allegations of fraud. But all noted that the problems with Jordan's democracy run much deeper than the conduct at the polls.

The country's convoluted elections system makes some votes worth more than others, prevents political parties from winning seats, and generally slants representation in parliament toward regime-loyal tribal groups. New seats for political parties were introduced this election, but with the official opposition not participating, no party won more than a handful of seats, and most won only one.

Many of the national lists, observers say, were created by the same tribal groups who typically control parliament. The new legislature looks remarkably like the old one.

"So what is the point of these closed lists?" Asked Ghaith Al-Qudah, head of the Islamic Action Front's youth wing. "There's no actual political life.... There are no actual political blocs in this new house of parliament."

And despite new regulations, there were widespread allegations of the longtime practice of vote buying. Candidates' agents surrounded many of the polling centers yesterday, corralling groups of young men to go vote. In one east Amman neighborhood, they were even allowed inside. Numerous voters showed their completed ballots to the candidates' observers.

Mr. Al Assaf accused the state of tacitly allowing vote buying as a way to increase turnout in the election. "It was so obvious and so allowed, that they just wanted to raise the numbers voting," he says.

Entrenched cynicism

For now the government seems to have emerged victorious, but it remains to be seen how much the problems that still assailed the vote will affect Jordanians' perception of the new parliament and confidence in the state's reform promises.

"It goes back to the underpinnings of the electoral structure, which hasn't really changed ... you continue to have a situation where vested and entrenched tribal figures and power brokers are at an advantage," says Scott Mastic, the director of Middle East programs at the International Republican Institute, which sent election monitors to Jordan for the past two parliamentary votes.

At the polls yesterday, several said that if this election produced a decent crop of lawmakers, things might change.

"We feel as if, maybe, it's going to be a decent one," said Issam Rashid, who had just cast his vote at a polling place in Amman's Wihdat neighborhood, a former camp for Palestinian refugees. "This is the first time we've had an independent election commission."

But long-held cynicism also cropped up.

"The old [parliament], what they did is useless. All these people were useless, because they were doing something for themselves, that's all," said Samir Al-Neimi, a Jordanian who lives in Abu Dhabi, but who had come back to vote.

"I hope ? but I don't believe in them."

Human-tiger conflict: Are the risks overestimated?

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Wildlife conservationists are well aware of the potential conflicts that exist between the endangered species they seek to protect and the human populations which inhabit areas where the animals live. Carnivores, such as tigers, pose a risk to humans and their livestock and can be killed because of this potential risk. Previous research has found that killing of animals can be motivated as much by social and psychological factors, such as perception of danger, as by any actual real risk posed by a species.

A new study published in the Springer journal Human Ecology has identified several key factors which may contribute to perceptions of risk from tigers in a conservation area in Bangladesh. The study, by Chloe Inskip and her colleagues from the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology in Kent, UK, and WildTeam, Bangladesh, is the first to use participatory risk mapping (PRM) and in-depth interviews to explore the wider socio-economic context of human-tiger conflict.

The survey was carried out around the Sundarbans mangrove forests of south-western Bangladesh, home to one of the world's largest remaining tiger populations. Although there are no human inhabitants of the Sundarbans, eight sub-districts with a total population of around 1.7 million people lie directly adjacent to the forest boundary. Records indicate that approximately 30-50 people are killed annually by tigers in the area.

The researchers held 54 semi-structured interviews in six villages which border the Sundarbans forest, followed by 385 questionnaires in a further ten border villages. Of all the issues related to lives and livelihood, tigers were the most commonly reported problem. Other issues recorded were largely poverty-related including low incomes, dependence on natural resources, poor infrastructure and services and a lack of clean water together with soil erosion and weather. Inskip and her colleagues identified the fact that these issues had a direct impact on villagers' perceptions of risk from tigers. The respondents' perceived susceptibility to and their ability to mitigate human-tiger conflict was influenced largely by their poverty related-problems.

The authors suggest that any actions taken to improve these socio-economic issues will also reduce the perceived level of risk from tigers and help to reduce the rate at which tigers are killed. For conservationists, this would mean a shift from traditional models of conflict reduction to holistic models which also incorporate situation-specific actions to reduce risk perceptions. In many poor, rural communities in conservation areas such as the Sundarbans, risk perception reduction is likely to be tied strongly to poverty alleviation.

The authors believe that the abatement of killing endangered species will only be achieved if the human dimensions and social context of human-wildlife conflict situations are well understood and appropriately managed. They conclude that "participatory risk mapping (PRM) and qualitative research are valuable tools for enhancing understanding of and identifying actions to address the wildlife-related risk perceptions which can influence killing behavior." Addressing risk perceptions will require long-term commitment and funding.

White veins of Mars: Curiosity hits 'a jackpot' in quest for wetter past

Curiosity rover has found mineral-filled fissures in the rocks of Gale Crater on Mars. Together with other evidence, the minerals suggest that the rocks were once 'saturated with water.'

White veins of minerals coursing through rocks on the floor of Mars's Gale Crater are providing some of the strongest evidence yet that the rover Curiosity's landing site once was a wetter, warmer place.

The details are still fuzzy. But the composition of the minerals indicate that they precipitated out of water flowing through fissures in the rock, while large grains within the rocks themselves are rounded, suggesting that water might have dulled their sharp edges.

Yellowknife Bay, the rocky expanse Curiosity currently inhabits, "is literally shot through with these fractures," says John Grotzinger, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena., Calif., and the mission's chief scientist.

It also features abundant, berry-shaped spherules that scientists say are sedimentary concretions formed in and worked over by water.?

All together, "basically these rocks were saturated with water," Dr. Grotzinger explained during a briefing Tuesday outlining the rover's latest exploits.

Yellowknife Bay represents "a jackpot unit," he added. Initially, researchers thought they might have to drive Curiosity up on the shoulders of Mt. Sharp, a towering summit in the middle of the crater, to find such a trove.

If Curiosity made these finds on Mt. Sharp, "we would have been absolutely thrilled," Grotzinger says.

Curiosity, a one-ton geochemistry lab on wheels, landed on Mars in August. Its goal is to see if the crater at one time could have been hospitable for simple forms of organic life. Curiosity has spent the past six months exercising its suite of 10 instruments and its seven-foot robotic arm in a series of tests aimed at ensuring all the hardware is working well before the rover heads for Mt. Sharp, its ultimate destination.

The rover probably won't begin to explore Mt. Sharp for another year.

Curiosity has traveled slightly more than a quarter of a mile, as the crow flies, since landing. Along the way, however, scientists have chosen targets for instrument tests that have already provided insights into the crater's geologic past ? including evidence for an ancient stream bed.
